UK learner question

    Hi all,

I can't drive at the moment, but I really need to learn asap.

My question is, with the new rules of learner drivers having to wait 6 months from issue of learner licence to being able to take your test, is it possible (theoretically) to do the week intensive learning in the UK, and pass the practical test there, and then come back to Ireland and drive?

If it is possible, can I swap to an Irish licence, complete with N plates upon my return?

Can I drive over here using the UK licence?

Would there be a problem with insurance over here?

Thanks everyone, looked for info, but couldn't find anything to answer this question.

Do you have a UK address? Where would you get the licence sent to?

You have to have a UK provisional to take the test you can't take it with an Irish one.

You need a UK address and complete some perjury, but apart from that there is no problem with driving in Ireland with a full UK licence.

I have relatives in the UK, would that count as a UK address?

I worked for a few years in the UK, so I have a NI number.

If you're happy to sign a false declaration on the day of your test stating that you have been resident in the UK for 6 months prior to the test and are happy to drive around on an invalid licence then off you go!

Realistically, by the time you apply for and receive a provisional (which for an Irish national will mean sending your passport to Swansea), apply for and sit a theory test, get an appointment for an intesive course (which generally means your driving test is booked before the course is booked not to mind started), you would most likely have gone through the 6 month period in Ireland anyway. I managed to get all this done and up to the UK test in 4 months but I was unconcerned with cost and very organised with documentation etc.

You will not be able to practice in Ireland on a UK provisional.
