No Fixed Abode

I have been having trouble with my mother which I won't go into detail, but the jist of it is me and her have clashed over her boyfriend and I have been found out to be right in what I was arguing.

She has in the mean time kicked me out of the family home (which is rented from Dublin City Council) I am now left with nowhere that I can actually live long-term. I am currently couch-hopping between relatives and friends and for a few nights a week I stay in my partners.

I am currently doing a course in college which I receive Back To Education Allowance for, and without I wouldn't be able to complete my course.

My mother has just informed me that she has removed my name from the property, thus leaving me with no fixed address. As I am reliant on social welfare for my studies what can I do to ensure I continue to receive payment. This also messes me up with applying for a job as without an address how does one get employed.

Thank you for any help, it's much appreciated.

Will one of your friends allow you to use their address for post?

Talk to DSP and explain the situation. They're aware that accommodation is a problem generally at the moment.

I wouldn't tell DSP to be honest, they'll cut your payment immediately. Happened me 4 or 5 months ago.

I would go to citizens advice and find out what social welfare payments are available to you based on the fact your couch-hopping. You might not be entitled to any all all - which means your BTEA would be stopped if the DSP find out about the fact you have no fixed address.

Is there any way you can talk with your mother and tell her that you will have to leave college if you have nowhere to live?

If not, is there any way any of the ppl you are staying with could confirm you are a full time resident at their address even if your are still couch-hopping. They would be required to fill out some forms if they are to do this.

In any case couch-hopping is not something you can do full time so the only way I think you can fix this quickly is to find student-accommodation in a house share with a landlord willing to fill out social welfare forms for you, which is not that easy either. You would get an extra payment for the rent.

You are in a very tricky situation especially as you wan't to say in college. Hope you can sort something out. Good luck.

I've looked into student accommodation but I wouldn't be able to afford it in Dublin. All my money would be going on rent.

Yes I'm afraid doing that also. Would it be possible for me to just carry-on with my mother's address for social welfare purposes whilst I try find accommodation?

Or do I have to notify them? I'll be f*cked without the money, as I'll have to drop out of college and still won't be able to get employed either as I've no address.

What had your brother got to do with this? Did she kick him out too?

Attempted to do so until she realeased she couldn't as he's a minor. He had an argument with her boyfriend over the same concerns I had.

He currently spends most of his day at his girlfriends home and stays there several nights a week. When at my mother's house he cooks/cleans for himself and sits in his room.

To be honest deferring a year of your course and focusing on getting away from such a toxic environment/out of homelessness wouldn't be an unreasonable thing to do. What I'm saying is don't get too worried about your education when worrying about having a roof over your head comes first.

Can anyone you're staying with let you use their address until you find a job, would anyone rent you out a room on what you can afford while you're studying?

I would add to the citizens advice suggestion and even say speak to your local TD for housing support. Keep in mind being a student can disqualify you from a lot of supports!

I basically dropped this year already half-way through and will be repeating next year. It's also my final year so I don't want to take any more time out.

I've considered speaking to a local TD for help with housing support. I'll look into that. And as for financial support, I'll be okay with my claim for BTEA I'm entitled to that until my course ends, I just can't claim it without an address.

Ask your bro to keep an eye out for post for you and collect it for you if possible, your mother can't interfere with your claim but if they suspect a change of address they would send post out and stop payment if it's not replied to, but they aren't likely to do that while you're on btea. But your mother can't ring up and say 'oh he doesn't live here, stop his payment'.

I had issues like this before, I had to drop out and get a job, at least you can use a friend s address for that, with the dole you might not be able to, as you have to show proof of residence and paying rent etc.

Sucky situation man. Hard to advise what to do. Maybe find a girl with her own place or really nice parents, get her to fall in love with you and you can move in with her!

I know a guy who was living in what he said was a 'homeless hostel', he never lost his dole, and eventually got a deposit for a room, but he wasn't a student.

Keep an ear out for other students looking to fill a room, sometimes people need to fill them on short notice and you won't have to pay a big deposit all at once.

I don't get your kind of human .. Why would you notify them ? You'll be left with no payment ... They don't kno any different so why would you make life awkward on yourself by doing that .. Some People amaze me

Nonsense all of it ... Your facts about social welfare in general forms and who needs to fill them out and rent assistance is utter rubbish ...
