    Hi All,

My girlfriend can't travel on a Ryanair flight early tomorrow morning due to a family emergency. My question is, can she use the return flight if she does not go on the outward flight? She intends taking a different outward flight in a couple of days.

    Thanks

Ryanair are point to point airline so it shouldn't affect the 2nd flight if she missed the 1st.

    with Ryanair indeed fine.

On other airlines, the likes of Lufthansa for instance, its very much not allowed, so you really need to check your airlines specific terms and conditions.

If you have bought a return ticket, why wouldn't an airline allow you to use the return leg? You've paid for it...

Can you post a link to illustrate please?

Because missing the first leg invalidates your ticket, it's in the t&cs of non point to point airlines.

However Ryanair is a point to point airline, they don't sell return tickets, you buy two separate flights so OP's girlfriend can use the original return leg

It does depend on the airline, I have done this with Ryanair before with no issue as they dont sell returns, you buy two singles.

With flybe for instance if you miss your first flight, they cancel the second one. Happened me before, hadnt even thought of letting them know I would still need the second one. It was ok, there was a spare seat so they let me on but they had my seat for sale again.

I also have the nice experience of calling them (a french airline) up to confirm, they said no problem on the phone, they said otherwise at the airport. 450 euros later I was on the flight.

the reason is simple. Lufthansa have a much more complicated fare structure than Ryanair.

for instance on simple direct flights, a return is cheaper than a 2x singles.
i.e. if you bought 2x single flights :
    Dublin-Munich for Friday 11th August = 122,70
    Munich-Dublin for the sunday after = 159,65
Total of 2x single fares = 273 Euro

But the same dates as a return on the same ticket 213,35

Luthansa are also a hub airline and thats where it really can kick in. For instance a Dublin-Munich-Bejing flight might be only 600Euro return, but Munich-Bejing (starting in Munich) is €1000.
Lufthansa have to price low in the Dublin market to compete with the middle east airlines connecting in Dubai etc, but for home customers they charge a premium for getting a direct flight.
If you could just do whatever you want and skip legs to your hearts content, then everyone in Munich or Frankfurt would just book a connecting flight and skip that first leg, so undermining Lufthansas efforts to shaft people in their home market.

when purchasing a ticket on a legacy airline, you agree to take the flights in the sequence booked. some LLC only sell point to point tickets so effectively what you think is a return is in fact, 2 singles.

Plus, direct flights are more expensive because of the convenience.

btw, from aer lingus terms and conditions , now that we kindof think they have the same policy as Ryanair
Please be advised that in the event you do not show up for any flight without advising us in advance, we may cancel your return or onward reservations. However, if you do advise us in advance, we will not cancel your subsequent flight reservations but Article 3.3.4 will be applicable in this case.

    Lufthansa's terms and conditions:

"5.6. Please be advised that if you do not show up for any flight without advising us in advance, we may cancel your return or onward reservation. "

So, the point is...let them know you need the return flight...

Good to know (I was unaware of this)...thanks for the info.
