What to tell potential employer ?

I basically got sacked from my job, but doing interviews and don't know what I'm gonna say if they ask why I left my last job?
I was thinking of saying I just left for new opportunities but that's lying and they'll figure out the truth eventually won't they ? Even if my reference says nothing about my sacking ?

Has anyone been in this situation and what did you do or say ?

A new employer will probably contact your ex employer for a reference. You could say you were made redundant due to an error of judgement on your part but you have learned your lesson and will not repeat the same mistakes.
It depends what you were sacked for as to whether this will work though!

I think honesty is always best.

I'd say you left after a difference of opinion with the employer. Add that this has never happened before and your confident it's not an issue going forward.

It will come out in your reference anyway (officially or otherwise) so it's best you grasp the nettle first, I think your honesty will be appreciated.

Personally when checking references I always ask "is there any reason you wouldn't hire this person back again", it usually brings anything out that's in the background, if a candidate hasn't been honest in interviews they are automatically discounted from the process.

It's a tough position OP and I hope you get the chance to move on.

Depends on circumstances of your sacking really
