I'm looking for any recommendations on small cars that would be more suited for long drives (cork to Donegal length) than my poor micra. Budget is around 4000

How often would you be doing the drive and in between what sort of driving would you be doing?

    Total annual mileage?

Any other things you want considered?

Maybe two or three times a year? Plus cork to dublin/Galway every month or two, and normal tipping about the city for groceries kinda thing. I don't really know much about cars to know what else I should consider. I've racked up almost 10000 km this year, but I've still been bussing some of my journeys

I'd recommend something as big as possible, more comfort and quieter.

I do 30,000km / year, at 7.4L/100km in a 1.8 petrol Volvo S40 which cost me roughly €2800 a year in fuel. A Diesel at 5.4L/100km would cost me approx. €1900.

So remember, even at big mileage such as this, you may save up to €1000 per year on fuel. Think about how long you'll have the car for when looking at the price difference between a petrol and diesel model.

I'd recommend a Volvo, with an electric seat for a long journey in that price range, and only because of the great seats. The SE Lux models have leather, Curise Control and electric seats as standard. Might be heated too if you're lucky. Most important thing on a long journey is comfort.

I'd be looking at cruise control for sure, something with a 6 speed gear box probably for the cruising on the motorway. If a lot of the journeys are short hops around town etc a diesel may not be worth it as there can be issues such as the DPF not regenerating.
