Heading to Munich for a few days and we're looking to do a day trip to castle Neuschwanstein.

Just wondering what would be the best way to get there?! Not renting a car but would like to be there early enough.

Any other tips for Neuschwanstein or Munich would be appreciated!

    Thanks

There is a train you can take that's fairly handy. Sorry I don't remember much else anymore.

You should also go to the concentration camp for a day trip

You can plan rail trips in Germany and buy tickets on the Deutsche Bahn site: https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml

    from: München Hbf

    to: Hohenschwangau Neuschwanstein Castles, Schwangau

There are direct trains to Füssen which takes about 2 hrs, followed by a 15 min bus journey to Hohenschwangau.

The best ticket for this journey is the Bayern Ticket. It includes all regional trains and buses within the state of Bavaria (including Munich city transport) after 09:00 on weekdays and all day at the weekend. It costs €25 plus €6 for each additional passenger (up to a maximum of four). There's no need to buy your tickets in advance.

It might be worth considering buying your tickets for Schloss Neuschwanstein in advance as there can be long queues: https://www.hohenschwangau.de/543.html

Some places that are worth seeing in Munich include: Viktualienmarkt (market near Marienplatz), English Garten, Olympiapark (the Olympic Tower and BMW Museum are located here), Schloss Nymphenburg, Residenz, Tierpark Hellabrunn (Munich Zoo) and the Deutsches Museum.

I recommend trying the Munich speciality Weißwurst.

Public transport in Munich is very cheap. You can look up ticket types/prices here: http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/homepage/

Other possible day trips you could consider if you have time are Salzburg (1 hr 45 mins), Berchtesgaden (2 hrs 30 mins) and Nuremberg (1 hr 45 mins). All are covered by the Bayern Ticket (regional trains only).

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

    and the Deutsches Museum.

+1 One of the premier Science and Technology museums in the world but only worth visiting if you can dedicate at least a half day to it and a whole day would be worth it if time permits.

for getting there early, there's a train which leaves just before 9am which you cannot take on a weekday, but the top tip there is just to buy a local transport ticket 1 zone ticket for 2.70 per person which covers the initial part of the trip to Pasing station before 9am, where the Bayern ticket then kicks in when the train leaves that station after 9am.

Great to know, thanks for tip!

yep, on the boundaries of whats possible

I just checked and the train leaves Hauptbahnhof at 08:53, arrives into Pasing at 8.59, departing at 9.00 just as the validity of the Bayern ticket kicks in.

Theres only a direct train every other hour from Munich to Füssen, alternating with a direct train from Augsburg to Füssen in the intermediate hour. Its still not an issue as you can get from Munich to somewhere halfways (Buchloe or Kaufbeuern) and catch it there.

NOW....... this actually can be used to your advantage for a small diversion on the way home to Augsburg which is only 40min from Munich. Its a lovely city, but more importantly it has a savage brewery and restaurant a 2 minute walk from the station called Riedle, and seeing as you'd be passing it at teatime on the way back from Füssen, a perfect time for a bit of grub somewhere that you otherwise wouldnt get to go to.

Thanks for the replies, some great info there!

Reading a bit more it seams like the train might be the way to go, supposed to be a scenic trip also.

Yep the deutsche museum is on the list alright, was there about 20 years ago and it was brilliant! Apart from that and the castle we haven't much else planned. Staying right beside Schloss Nymphenburg so will check that out too!

You are probably planning this in any case but just in case....

Buy your tickets online before you visit. The Que for the ticket office can be over 150m long 3 abreast depending on time, how many buses pull-up before you etc.

When you arrive you can skip all of this for a separate ticket collection only Que.
You will have to find your way past the other Que to find your way into it.
