I thought Steven Soderbergh "retired"

Nice to see Mr. Craig take on a very different role from Bond, his character Joe looks fun

looks like they are giving much of the story away in the trailers

I assume it'll be how the events during the heist go down is what they'll be wanting to wow the crowd with

Saw it last night. Not as entertaining as hoped. Most of the funnies are in the trailers and wasn't all that engrossed by the rest of it...

Found it entertaining, save until after the main event where it seemed to lose some momentum. It had a very localised feel to it, imo, which is not a complaint.

I really appreciated how respectful the film was towards its characters. I'd read a few headlines along the lines of 'is the film condescending towards the South?' - but actually felt most of the central characters were lovingly draw (beyond the two bumbling brothers).

Minor Soderbergh for sure, but enjoyable and endearing nonetheless. I appreciated it as a low-stakes take on the Ocean's Eleven formula, from obviously a different perspective. Soderbergh is so confident with shooting and editing, this can't help but feel casually accomplished in a way that puts it that few steps above similar fare. Missteps for sure - the intercom gag in the prison felt like a different film - but good to have Soderbergh back on the big making the sort of effortlessly slick capers he's uniquely capable of.

Saw it last night and I'm still uncertain as to whether I enjoyed it or not. It wasn't a bad movie, but I didn't leave it with the sense that I had watched something great.

Daniel Craig was almost unrecognisable. There were times during the movie where I forgot he was acting and totally bought into his character. Seth MacFarlene was Seth MacFarlene in a funny wig and doing a funny accent.

What I did feel is if they left out
the FBI and the NASCAR side-stories, both of which ultimately went nowhere
and stuck solely to the heist plot, then it would have made for a better and much shorter movie.

Enjoyable for sure, but kinda weird too :D Just felt really minimalist, in almost a Coen brothers way, at times. Agreed with the cut suggestions above ^

I thought it was excellent. Seemed like a Coen Brothers movie more than anything.

This is it for me. I enjoyed it but it never stirred me, even on a comedic level. I didn't like Seth McFarlane's character and those Nascar guy's involvement in the film. I wanted to be drawn to the brothers more but it didn't happen throughout. If this didn't have the starry cast that it had then I think it would certainly get panned a bit more as a Coen Bros wannabe. As is, it's not a good enough return to form by Soderbergh.

Saw it last night, it was alright. Wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Sort of trundled along at a slow pace, then we had some action, then slow pace, then action again. It should've either stuck to the heist formula, or balanced it out a bit better with the FBI parts, which felt a bit tacked on - you felt the movie had run it's course at that point.

Craig was great - it was jarring to not hear him talk like James Bond at first - but his character was the best in the movie. The two guys were fine, sort of played it a little too laid back, if you know what I mean. No back story so I never really felt we were convinced they could pull off a complicated job like that. At least with Ocean's 11 you got some feeling that these guys were pros and could do the seemingly impossible.
The heist was too easy in the end
    .

Supporting cast was good, I like Dwight Yoakam's character but I did feel some of the comedy fell a bit flat - there were only a few titters in the audience in the cinema, rather than full on laughs.

One question I have, because I just couldn't understand what he said due to the accent:
At the end in the bar when Adam Driver asks his brother how he knew the coast was clear to get the money, the explanation is something to do with his smart phone but I couldn't make out what he said.
Can anyone elaborate? This is where IMDB boards used to be handy!

5/10 I'd say; looked good, sounded good, some great moments. Could've done without Seth MacFarlane and the NASCAR stuff, as mentioned above. Thought Riley Keough was good as the sister.

Ha, my OH had the same trouble :D So what he said was:
He suspected that his phone was being tapped; so he stopped paying his phone bills, figuring that if he was indeed being listened to, the FBI would instruct the phone company to keep his account active despite any non-payment. When the investigation was canned, then that instruction would have expired & of course the phone company then immediately booted a non-paying customer. The day the phone went dead, Tatum's character figured he was finally in the clear.

    Ah! Very good. Thanks.

As for the movie, I dunno, I quite liked it as the obvious low-stakes Oceans 11 it was shooting for. Its pace was definitely uneven & the FBI subplot was bolted on way too late in the narrative, but it was a movie best described as a 'caper', an old-fashioned Robin Hood styled robbery where even the rougher edged characters were endearing in their own way - Daniel Craig being the obvious standout there.

I saw this last night and found it to be very enjoyable. Some good twists and turns, as would be expected in a Soderbergh heist film. I did not recognise Seth McFarlane at all! The moustache and hair really threw me!

I would call it a poor man's Ocean's film. Not poor because of the overall quality, but more in line with a low budget independent film. I thought it was interesting that
    Hilary Swank
was in the bar at the end. It certainly leaves it open for a sequel and keeps her role as quite ambiguous. Perhaps she was in on the whole deal? I can't help but think of Matt Damon's character's Dad in the Ocean's films and how he helped him out when they were stuck. Maybe she will take on a similar role in a possible sequel or her pursuit of the Logan brothers will be the main challenge to them.

    I'd give it a 7.5/10.

I'd probably echo the review above. Really solid heist movie driven largely by the talent of the cast with some great quirks and twists.

I had no idea until I read this thread that that was Seth McFarlane. Interestingly the only aspect of the film I didn't like - the character did not quite gel with the rest of the film at all, though the overall delivery of the initial bar-room encounter was top notch.

Daniel Craig is good, but Tatum and Driver really deliver big time.

Just saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it. I'd normally avoid Channing Tatum and Adam Driver movies, but they were excellent, as was Craig, and the whole supporting cast (good to see Roy from the American Office getting work!). I too didn't recognise Seth McFarlane, and while he gave a good performance, the character seemed very out of place in this movie. The rest of the movie was very tight, and he was just some English douchebag tacked on to it! He did remind me of one of the Scousers from Harry Enfield though :)
