Not noisy but a water feature beneath the window could work as an effective deterrant?

    Something like this: WF1008-Water_trough_water_feature.jpg

A bell mounted on the wall and a trip wire to activate it. Or a precariously balanced dustbin lid to one side and the aforementioned trip wire (fishing line), Just make sure the lid doesn't crash down onto grass..

Perhaps one of those personal alarms that you yank a pin from to sound it. Fix it to the wall (covering with plastic to protect from rain) and have the trip wire pull the pin. Put it higher than cats are going to walk. I used one on a site I had to protect from theft and it worked fine.

Just having gravel under the window can be a help as it makes a noise when walked on. Then you want a nice big planter with a very wide top and narrow base then plant something thorny in it. The narrow base makes the planter difficult to climb on without it falling over, the thorny plant if big enough will be in the face of anyone trying to move the pot and moving the pot on gravel will make a bit of noise.

I personally think gorse is beautiful, you could keep it pruned and it would be cheap enough to dig up from field or hedgerow or even cuttings? when I first moved over here the neighbour had a beautiful yellow bush by the side of her gate ,,,, it was Gorse

Glue. Silicone and the like. A burglar can pull the pane retention strips out but wouldn't be able to remove the pane, because it's stuck in. If your asking what mastic is then your probably not going to be able to do the job though.

Many a motorcyclist has come a cropper due to a driver pulling out of a side road and not seeing the motorcyclist approaching. Reason is: the drive is programmed to look for cars and doesn't register the motorcycle (small frontal area).

Ditto fishing line. Sure, if you're looking for it you'll see it. But a burglar isn't expecting and isn't looking for it. Indeed, they're looking at the house for activity and around in case of neighbours. Try it out: span a piece of thin fishing line over the garden on a route the missus or kids take and see if they notice it. Put it about a foot from the ground.
Also like the dustbin lid idea, but Id like something a bit decorative
The idea would be to have the lid perched on something against a side garden wall and the trip wire running from it across the back of the house.

As an alternative, its also possible to buy battery powered passive infra-red detectors that you could place in the room
