Upgrade 20 year house

    Currently renovating my home.
    It was built in 1996 and still has the same rads, boiler and small copper cylinder with loosely fitted lagging jacket.

    I'm just moving in and coming from a 10 year old timber frame house that was really well insulated and didn't cost much on heating the space or water so want to do the best I can for the new 'life' home.

    I am upgrading the boiler for sure and fitting zoned controls foare heating and water.
    I plan to leave the roads unless really really required to change them?
    I want to get a better hot water cylinder and I am hoping to either go with Solar Thermal or Solar PV with an immersion divertor.

    Should I be putting in a stainless steel 300L cylinder?
    The solar thermal comes with it.
    But if I go for solar PV, then I will have to purchase this separately.

    Any advice welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

    House is about 125 Sq. M with a family of 4, maybe another in a year or 2.

    Not answering your questions directly but to let you know that the following grants are available from SEAI ;

    €600 For Heating Controls, €300 for Cavity Wall Insulation, €1,200 for Solar Energy Installation and €4,500 for External Wall Insulation.

    Worth considering.

    A recent survey on a plumbing group. In other words plumbers voting on this.

    Apply for the seai grant, if your on oil then a new grant vortex boiler, fully zone house into living, bedroom and hot water zones. As for cylinder then for 4/5 people a 300 l cylinder. I would go for 300l joule eco 80 cylinder, it's a lot better insulated than normal cylinder. As for thermal solar I wouldn't bother. Pv solar if budget allows

    Could I cut it back to a single coil cylinder if I decide on Solar PV?

    Yes as you won't need solar coil. I'm not up on pv solar but last job we undertook that was getting them installed, we installed a single coil 300l eco 80 with 2 immersions
