Diesel pump clicking but tank 20% full...

    Yet the tank is overflowing...

I haven't filled up in a week or so and the gauge shows it's c. 20% full. So it's about my usual time to top up. However, as soon as I put the nozzle into the car it started clicking. I pulled it back a bit and it was still clicking. Then c. €7 later the fuel was flowing on to the courtyard.

Assuming the tank is *not* actually full, why would it be overflowing? Thanks.

Hate to be captain obvious but my guess is - the tank is full but the guage is broken, hence the overflowing fuel...

My mams c4 always has drastically different levels shown on the guage every time you turn it on.

If they've been driving it for a week then there's a good chance it's not full.

One mans week of driving is another mans morning of driving, it seems odd alright, but unless its a hoor of an airlock in the filler neck, i still reckon it's just full with a dodgy guage..

No, not a Renault. I got back into the car, posted the above and started googling:

    1. Why does my fuel tank overflow when it's not full?

    2. When refilling fuel tank, fuel overflows before tank is full

    3. Why does my fuel not fill all the way

    etc

I got out again with a tissue and there was a good bit of water around the hole you put the nozzle into when I opened the little door (?!) where you put the diesel in. I dried it up, along with the noticeable amount of gunk in the same area, in particular immediately underneath that hole that the nozzle goes into. I went back to the garage and put another €40 or so into the tank without any problem. In all my years putting fuel into a car this has never happened. So, just in case somebody googles and comes across this thread try that for a solution.
