car overheating?

    Hi.

Have a 2010 jetta. Noticed last night that the temp gauge was rising. Pulled in and turned off the car for about 15 mins.

After that I turned it on and it went back up over half way but when I started driving it went back down to normal. Brought it to the garage today and they couldnt find any fault. Driving home from the garage it stayed at normal.

However I notice again that when I started it again after I got home the hand started rising again but when I drive off it drops back down to normal again.

Anybody have an idea what could be causing it?

Could be anything, thermostat, temp sensor etc. My guess is the electric water pump.

What checks did the garage do? Have you checked the coolant level yourself?

Coolant level was a bit low so they topped it up and said to keep an eye on it and marked it. They checked the water pump and said it was working fine and couldn't spot and leaks

Did you hear the fan switching on/off ?

The mechanical water pumps on those engines are prone to leaking but it usually brings about low coolant warnings on the dash, not sending the temp gauge to the red.

Has the car has the water pump changed before? It should have after 5 years.

I'm not sure. I only have the car since January. The fan does come on.
