Which is the best free car valuation tool?

Its insurance time again and I have to put a number in the box for the value of the car. There are a few sites that offer to value your car for a price but I like free. I tried a couple of free services (Adverts.ie and beepbeep.ie)

Adverts seems to use a generic algorithm (so much for leather etc) while beep beep searches price history based on the actual model of a car. Beepbeep is valuing my car about 10% higher though. Any opinions on the best free valuation service?

Just give a rough estimated guess. On the higher side of what you think it's worth. Insurance will make up their own figure of what it's worth if it was crashed, god forbid.

There's a calculator on the revenue site used for VRT which I used to value my car for last insurance

@Noccy_Mondy don't worry that is what I am doing - taking a ballpark and rounding up but I am still interested to hear peoples views of the reliability of these sites.

@somesoldiers thanks for the link to the revenue site. Their estimate is very similar to the beep.beep figure.

While the value you supply may affect the insurance cost (but, not much surprisingly) the value paid if car written off will not reference the price you put on it. The insurance company Will Then value your car based on a car similar to what you wrote off... and they (I suspect) will round down.

If you read the small print they say something like: "We will pay an amount equal to what we decide the car is worth BUT WE WILL NOT PAY MORE THAN THE FIGURE YOU PUT IN".

It is kind of a lose lose situation for the punter so you just have to estimate on the high side to be safe. I don't know why the insurance company doesn't just tell you their estimate in your quote. They are better able to work that stuff out than we are.

They'll make low ball offers while the owner has OTT estimates, eventually both will meet somewhere in the middle.

I'd look on Donedeal, take the cheapest private sale model described as having NCT and no issues with the dearest private sale and take a price halfway between the two.
