whats the correct amps for welding on rim

    need to weld a lug for a dual wheel on the rim. Have tyres and tubes removed. Would 115 amps with 3.2 stick be ok? My fear is of burning through the rim which would be a complete disaster.

    That's a hard question to answer as it depends on steel condition and welders ability. On something critical like that I'd always start conservative rather than blowing a big dirty hole in it.

    Would it be safer get a pro to do it? The heat generated will tend to be in the direction you point the rod, so the more you angle towards the lug, the less damage done.

    I personally would give it a run or two at 115 amps, then when you get a feel for the thickness of the steel, after chipping and cleaning, give it a good over layer at 130 or 145.

    Depends on loads of things, if it's a 6013 rod they would be the most common in these parts (aka The farmers rod!) so 115amps is fine, just bear in mind 115 for a 3.2mm 6013 rod is close to maximum and if you're welding in the vertical up direction you should knock 15 amps off that.

    That's ball park sort of numbers, machines can burn a little hotter or cooler depending on their calibration.
    What sort of thickness steel are we talking?

    burn the rod more towards the lug you are welding on; and like with everything preparation is key, clean it off really well and you will find that
    the extra heat needed to burn the ****e out of the way wont be needed and therefore no holes will be blown in the rim.
