Learning to play in Co Cavan or Meath

    Good morning,

I think I'm too thick to use the search function properly, wasn't able to find anything on this:

I was given a set of used clubs as a gift (and as a subtle hint to pick up a hobby in the fresh air :) ) and was wondering where one can learn how to play from a Pro in the Cavan or Meath area ? Never played before and would like to learn the basics from someone I can rely on to teach the proper form etc. from scratch.

Not sure if there are driving ranges that offer this kind of deal, or if I would need to look for a course with a pro ?

Thanks a a good, sunny, weekend to All,

    cheers

I'm a member at Co Meath Golf Course near Trim. Excellent setup for lessons with Driving Range, Chipping and Putting Green and practice Bunker area. The club pro Robin is regarded as an excellent instructor and would be a good option. Best of luck it's a great sport.

As far as I know Royal Tara are quite good for beginners. They offer lessons and limited membership on a reduced rate to encourage people to take up golf

I'm a member in Tara but I'm not sure if they have an offer for new golfers. They do have a deal for under 30 and a slightly higher rate for under 35's.

The practice facilities are top class. You have the full length driving range (mats in the winter and grass in summer) right beside the clubhouse/proshop and 1st tee's. €3 for 40balls

3 putting/chipping greens there aswell including bunker.
Pitching area just beyond the 1st on the yellow nine.

2 very good pro's with good rates for package lessons (4 for 100)

The course can be quite long though and a bit boring but it would probably be ideal for a new golfer as there aren't as many places to lose a ball as compared to the likes of headfort/knightsbrook etc.

The real important question though is where abouts are you? If you live in Cavan town you would be much better off getting somewhere else as the time to travel would mean less practice and play etc. Try to get somewhere within 20minutes of home.

Now that I think of it, it was a lady golfer that had joined recently on some beginners package, so was possibly just for ladies

Many thanks for the answers guys, much appreciated. I actually live right at the Cavan/Meath border in the Kells area. Wouldn't really mind driving a bit, my main concern is to learn it properly from scratch so i don't adopt bad habits. (..find it really hard to fix a bad form in terms of movement once it set in the head)

Tara is a good shout then with the M3 but Virginia has a small 9 hole course aswell which might suit.

Headfort has two great course's and adequate practice facilities but the cost is higher because of it. The New course may not be as enjoyable for a new player either as there is alot of water but the Old course would be fine while still being a tough test. Heafort have a pitching area, bunker area and two putting greens along with nets. They also have a driving range ( bring and collect your own balls) but can be difficult to get space on but does the job. Not sure on who the Pro's are there at the minute apart from Brendan but I'm sure they're more than adequate.

If you want to play a round in Tara give me a PM and I can bring you out to show you around and for a casual game.

Thanks a lot for the offer Dan, much appreciated. I took some lessons with the local Pro at the Headfort; think I found a new hobby. Amazing how relaxing just practicing at a driving range can be. :)
