If you had a choice of buying a one year or two year old car and the two year old had lower mileage than the one year old, which would you go for?

Buy the two year old if it is in good condition.
I'm an OAP. Six months ago I traded-in a seven year old car for a nearly new car.
The 7yo car had only 50k kms on it and I'm sure people were worried about it.
I'm retired ten years and that was the reason for the very low one owner from new mileage.

I hate diesel too mainly because of the tractor noise and country person image but may have to consider it as all Volvos on sale are diesel. Out of interest what are your reasons?

Reasons? Don't ya know it's that time on AH where comes up with a random thread , I'll shortly be starting one called "how old is your dog ?" after that it'll be "how well do you like your toast done?".

Buy the two year old. Use the savings difference for tax/insurance.

I'd go for the one I liked the look of the best but if both are the same model then I'd go for the 2yr old with the least mileage so long as the condition of the car matched the 1 yr old car.

    Depends on the price differential.

    The electric one, obviously.

But tbf, I never really understood the Irish obsession with what year is showing on the license plate.

Great if you're doing big mileage, not so great if you're not. Generally speaking diesels have more things and more expensive things that can go wrong.

Choice between two or one year old car? The two year old. Some other owner has taken the depreciation hit and if the mileage is lower and all other things being equal it's a no brainier. Unless you're wedded to the daft idea that the year on the plate matters that much, especially in that age range.

Whatever about their reputation on the reliability front(nearly always hugely exaggerated), it's clear to anyone with a functioning pair of eyes and a modicum of aesthetic sensibility that Alfa Romeo have a long standing well deserved reputation for producing extremely stylish cars. Try naming any other mainstream manufacturer that comes close on that front.

    Make is everything to me.

I'd drive a 10 year old BMW over a new Nissan.

Does any other country even display the year?

The UK do, but they encrypt it into letters. So you'd need to know which letter is the one to show the year, and then you'd need to know the year each letter stands for... and no, I haven't the foggiest why they'd do that.

I don't know of any other country doing it.

My Ford Kuga is the quietest car I've ever driven. In fact I frequently have pedestrians wandering all over the road in front of me because they can't hear me behind them.

Me I like my toast done on one side only, medium to well done, in the grill. With some kerrygold and local honey on the toasted side. Referred to as 'granny toast' in my house.

Oh and on topic...substance over style definitely....not worth the heartache.

Go on, say it. You don't want to look like a smelly, backward culchie. How long did you spend trying to dress up the description to make it seem like you're not pretentious and superior feeling?

Old enough to know better the little bollix,he's 28 now and on his next birthday he'll be 35 somehow. Doesn't stop him from regularly pissin' under the stairs, even when he's sober.

To be honest it depends on how the car is maintained!
Car A might have 40,000 miles and Car B might have 60,000.
Car A might have been poorly serviced and driven by somebody who was fond of the clutch and car B might have being driven well and serviced regularly. People often makes a big deal out of millage and forgot about maintenance!

I'd buy the both of them and be dammed;-) save me the agony of wondering what the neighbours/people who know me think about how I'm getting on in life.
