How much will this cost me?

OK, I stupidly backed into a car in a car park this evening. I stuck the town hitch of my jeep into the front bumper of a car. Nobody around so I left my contact details under the wiper. Got a call from the owner who was grateful to have gotten the note in fairness.
The damage is a hole the size of a ball hitch and a cracking about 2 inches long coming from it. The car is a 2012 BMW 520d. What am I looking at?

good man for leaving your number, hopefully he will go easy on you, did you take a photo?

If there is a hole in the bumper, the owner is more than entitled to a new bumper.
    Possibly 700 to 900.

Just logged in to say well done for leaving your details, would have been very easy to drive off and leave that person in the **** for a new bumper. The karma will get back to you @ some stage

Do they come pre-sprayed at that or will he need a body shop to do it?

I'd hope, considering your honesty OP, that you have a lot of "good-will" on your side from the perspective of the BMW driver.
If they know the right people or have the know-how, they'll likely source a replacement bumper from a scrapyard or get a repair costed as opposed to a replacement.

If they don't, then their options are probably limited and they'll could look for a new BMW supplied/fitted bumper, simply because they don't know how to source an alternative.

Might be an idea to discuss how open they are for 3rd party assistance to sort this, at your expense, but without going full dealer prices?

Sorry to say, a new bumper on a BMW will be easily €1300 if going through BMW. If the owner is more resonable you could suggest a smart repair (prob cost you €200) plus €200 into yer mans hand. This isn't as good as a new bumper obviously but the owner might be open to it.

In fairness he was sound and seemed like he doesn't want to ride me. I think he was thinking along your lines but in fairness I am in no position to be pushy. I will let him get a quote or two and see then.

€700 or €1300 it will be an insurance job. If a smart repair is OK with him then it will be cash. Explain a smart repair to me. Will it look the same as a new bumper if done well?

€700 would get you a bumper supplied painted and fitted for a Corolla.

Smart repair would look 95% as good as an undamaged bumper. A lot of garages do this. It's a spot repair so they wouldn't be painting the whole bumper. They'd plastic weld it, use filler etc. It probably wouldn't take another hit too well.

There are a lot of companies doing it, I used to use Auto Smart Systems, dont know if they're still around.

http://autosmartsystems.ie website looks a bit broken.

Fair play leaving a note -

I'd a drive off done on me 2 years ago, had a theory at the time who did it and that came out trumps - anyhow I absolutely rode her for it, brand new wing from Toyota, rental car, etc...ended up going through the insurance.

...However had it been the scenario she left a note like yourself a good scrapper wing and paint would have sufficed ;)

Thanks for that. Look he is entitled to make the decision. If I were in hospital shoes I would probably take a smart repair as it is far preferable to coming out to a damaged car and no note, but the decision is his and I will pony up regardless.

Really need to see the pic, probably a new bumper, hopefully not anything underneath damaged.

But respects for leaving your number.

I had a woman blow my door mirror off while I was parked, she kept going even though I drove after her  I took her number and went to the Gardaí, when they came knocking she admitted it and wanted me to replace the mirror before she paid up, cheeky b1tch. I replaced the whole unit to teach her a lesson, if she had stopped I would only replace the mirror which was about ?8 at the time. By the way how did you catch her with just a theory?

The bumper was sitting exactly right, gaps all perfect etc.

Easily said but it's not that simple.
If that car has radar cruise or city brake function or auto parking or any of these automated functions, the sensors need to be 100 percent correctly positioned and calibrated.
You really don't know what could be needed once inspected.
Bumpers are no longer bumpers, they are bill generators.
I had an old Audi 80. Neighbour forgot I was parked behind his truck and backed into the car and pushed it across the road in gear with hand brake on - It had a small scratch on the number plate after!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,795 ✭✭✭Neilw

The bumper would need to be replaced, it may have parking sensors which may need replacing too.
As mentioned, mounts could be cracked. Rad, air con condenser or intercooler could be damaged, bent or mounts cracked.

Then again it could be a cheap and easy fix, my point is you can't guess what needs to be replaced without removing the bumper.

I hope bodyshops are keeping up with the times in regards car tech. Last time I had my car in, it needed a new headlight which required the bumper to come off. They disconnected all the PDC sensors without disconnecting the battery first, had nothing but PDC control module errors and erroneous proximity warnings for the first few hours.

Good job I could reset it all myself with the correct software, initially when I went back to the bodyshop to point out the errors on screen, they were all "oh we hadn't seen that". Yeh right, it popped up a minute after I started the car on their premises. The headlight wasn't set correctly in place either.

This karma came back to me this evening. The owner of the beamer rang me to say he has sourced a smart repair and it is coming in at €250 cash. I have to go with him when he is collecting the car to pay for it.
He said that given my honesty in leaving my number he didn't want to ride me. Alls well that ends well.

Fair play to you Grueller...what goes around comes around. You were decent to him and you've hit lucky on the bill.

    You got very lucky there.

In fairness I'd be wanting a new bumper personally but sounds like you got an easy going type.
