Insure old car for purchaser test drives

    Hi all,

Bought my current car 7 years ago in the UK and thinking of an upgrade by the same process next year. Prior to this car the old one had gone completely wallop so there was no potential for resale.

But my existing car is in good nick and I'll get a few grand for it if I sell it privately. But .. if I get a new car in the UK and transfer my insurance on to it does that leave me with no way of allowing potential purchasers to test drive the one I'm selling?

It would be far less than ideal to have to sell the existing one (an unknown length of time) before going looking for a new one.

How have other people addressed this?

Your own insurance would not cover them test driving unless it had open drive and they met the criteria usually being aged 25 plus with full licence.

Just check those doing the test drive have driving other cars on their policy, ask to see their insurance cert. This will give 3rd party over for your car when they are driving, ie if they crash your car in to a wall during the test drive the all is covered but your car isn't.

Why? The loss IS to the 3rd party in the end - the owner is not the insured (1st party) nor the insurance company (2nd party).

Interesting, yes would like that clarified as 3rd party would be the seller.

As it happens I do have open drive.

    BUT ..

I thought that the purchasers own insurance would only cover them 3rd party on another vehicle provided that vehicle was separately insured by someone else. I didn't think, for example, that I could just get into any uninsured vehicle I want and automatically have 3rd party cover on it?

I'm more concerned about being appropriately covered legally than the possibility of the test driver damaging the car.
