Can Irish rail honestly justify charging people such high prices?? I've paid €18 for a one way ticket from Carlow to Dublin, which is basically robbery imo.

You should have bought it on their website. Only €9.69.

Or there are a few bus options too.

Book online in advance and fares will always be cheaper for that journey.

Sure if you had a car for that journey it would cost you more than that for that trip when you factor in tax/insurance/nct/petrol/diesel etc.

Robbery :). Ah sure they should just have a bucket at the station for donations then with a sign saying pay what you want.

Surely there's a private bus company covering the route no? These companies are usually a lot better value and in my case they're also quicker into Dublin than the train so it's a no brainer

But you'll still have to pay tax/insurance/nct whether make journey or not if you own a car.

18 euro for that journey by rail sounds not bad to me. what do you think the fare should be?

Disregarding the price online, as I stupidly didn't check beforehand, I just thought €18 for a one way fare was quite expensive. I was thinking maybe it would be €10-€12.

fair point i guess. unfortunately rail fares will often always be more expensive then bus fares due to the nature of funding and the way the railway generally operates. we would all love fares to be the same as bus fares, maybe a bit higher if the onboard environment was of a proper quality befiting the premium nature that rail travel should bring.

It's no surprise train operators always want you to buy a return ticket. Your 18 quid more less paid for a return trip.

In fairness, ever since they launched online booking, Irish Rail has been decent in not punishing those travelling just one-way.

    Unlike sister company, Bus Eireann.
