Can a company monitor your internet usage without telling you? For example present you with a sheet showing times you might have clicked onto Facebook or other non work related sites.

    All companies do it.

The key is not getting caught. Go to the jacks and go on the Internet.
Or minimise the screen so its on your emails and can click out fast.
Just dont be relaxing while everyone is busy.

Im having my morning poo and reading the news and stupid threads

It'll be in the internet/it usage policy.
Did you sign one or click on one when at any stage?

Eitherways, if you've been presented with it it means that:
    1) you've been so bad with your usage that someone noticed
    2) that person got so pissed off they complained
    3) someone was asked to investigate, and present the log
    4) someone "had to have a chat" with you.

So heed the warning! You'll need to change perception, and that won't be easy. Best way is simply to give up internet during work for a few months, until people think you've changed. Then only use it sparingly.

Either that or they're out to get you out. In which case, good luck.

All companies generally have an internet policy which will state that occasional non work related internet usage is acceptable. But if you have been called up on it then there is obviously a perception you are wasting half the day online. Time to clean up your act OP.

We have one where I work. I remember having to sign something or other at the time. I mostly use my phone, though I don't know if anyone has ever been contacted over their Internet use.

I have a friend who worked in a place where they'd print out a page of their Internet use and have them sign it. I don't know how often it happened but it was something they did as a matter of course. Needless to say, my friend used her phone instead.
