Concrete on top of concrete

    Hi all

We have a concrete yard that meets a concrete footpath. The footpath is too high so a step is needed. I'm wondering in my head can I just make up the form work for a single step and put it in place on the yard and pour concrete to make the step OR should I take out the yard concrete where the step is put in a base and pour concrete

    Thanks lads for any input

pouring on top is fine. Just make sure the surface has been scrubbed and cleaned of any debris, moss etc so the new concrete will make a good connection with the old.

If the existing concrete is very smooth it would be a good idea to roughen the surface to give a better mechanical key. Might be a bit overkill but you could drill the yard base in 3 or 4 locations and hammer in small "dowels" made from offcuts of rebar- the poured section won't move, especially if vehicle tyres come in contact.

Would it be an option to paint on coat of SBR on the clean surface, then add some to the mix of new concrete to give it some purchase ?
