What code reader should I buy?

I've been reading in these threads a lot about consulting code readers.

My DIY experience pre-dates such readers.

I have no knowledge of code readers and would like to begin to learn how to use them.

Can anyone advise me on this subject? Any recommendations on what to buy would be very helpful.

The cars I am particularly interested in servicing at present are a Volvo V70 and a Honda HRV.

    depends on you budget

Cheap OBD bluetooth with free android software for €20 will read some engine codes, might clear them

Getting to manufacturer specific data like ABS, airbags, service reset:

Manufacture specific tool like VOLVO VIDA DICE say 100
Good generic reader, Autel are good with various capabilities, and prices 100-250

I got a launch x431 recently which covers all models with lots of functions, like DPF forced clearing, activating components, coding new components - would be close to top of the range and very happy with it.

It really depends on what you will need it for.

A cheapo reader like a EML327 can be got for 10/15 euro, and is good to kinda get you into the field. Should you want to learn or use it more you can get one with more functions.

I bought the Autel MD802. I payed 300 for it last year it is a good diagnostic tool. It comes with a years free updates which is handy. Iv not had a problem with it at all so if you were willing to spend that amount then its a good option.

I would advise you to be wary of where you get it tho as there are alot of cheap clones out there which apparently dont have the updates, support etc. i got mine from a company up north whos name escapes me at the moment.
