Reporting a farmer

Hello I have become aware of a situation on a small holding that has me shocked.
The individuals in question have done a most inhumane treatment of animals.

I feel they should be reported for what they have been doing and potentially stopped from engaging in farming.

Where is the best place to start with reporting them?

Can you maybe explain A little about the situation so that we could give the best advice?

I'm a little concerned about what I am allowed to say ?

    But it involves cruelty

Is it to livestock or domestic pets?

It's a free country. You are allowed to say what you like. Try and keep account factual. Without mentioning names etc

Report it to the relevant authorities as to be honest cruelty is cruelty be it to domestic animals or livestock. Pass on your information and let authorities sort it out.

Make sure you "became aware" of all the facts pertaining to this particular situation before you take any further actions. It's not unknown for baseless rumours to do a lot of damage to a person's livelihood.

Sorry just to be clear, I wasn't implying that cruelty to livestock is acceptable, just I figured if it was domestic it might be a call to DSPCA (though I have my doubts about their effectiveness) or dept of agriculture if farm animal. Cruelty to any animal makes me sad :(

Report to the Dept of Agriculture asap, once you have established what you believe is likely true

I am not basing this on any rumours. its a fact. I wouldn't dream of reporting anyone based on something I may have heard or a rumour.

is there a particular dept I need to contact
Im not a farmer and not familiar with all the different avenues

Just go to the garda station and make a statement reporting what you have seen. The guards will follow up on it and take what ever action is needed.

Out of curiosity, what form is the cruelty taking?

I'm not saying this is the case here, but a farmer neighbour of mine gets reported occasionally because he has a field in the middle of a nearby town, and in his words "if the cattle are dirty or look sad, I get reported!"

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 9 Bayside87

Yes the farmer has asked that I don't report

We got reported once for having the cattle penned waiting for the vet to do a test he was 4 hrs late.

Is it not the local dvo that should be contacted?

As far as the DSPCA are concerned they don't care about farm animals. They once put down one of our sheep in our field without contacting us.

Think that answers your question. If he's asked you not to report him he knows what he's doing is wrong so can't even plead ignorance.

DSPCA only show their noses when there is a bit of publicity for them.

Link to DAFM website - Animal Health and Welfare section. When you click on it there is a dedicated phone number and email for reporting cases of animal cruelty.

OP, would you care to elaborate? Maybe we can guide you on whether it is a cruelty issue or not.

Who are we to judge, if the farmer has asked the OP not to report, he/she obviously knows there's an issue so I would encourage the OP to report

not necessarily, what a member of the public sees as cruelty might just be a small issue(lamness/down cow etc) and the farmer would still ask not to reported for something like that.

Report the matter to the local District Veterinary Office. Number available here. They will send someone to investigate. Perhaps the farmers own vet. I was contacted to visit a client on foot of a report. It turned out someone who wasn't familiar with livestock misread a situation. I reported back all was okay and that ended the matter.

The DVO are aware of farming norms more so than people in the other options suggested.

Most cases I've come across of animals being mistreated are where the farmer is to be pitied not pilloried.

I find it odd that OP won't say straight out what the issue is.

Many non farming folk mistake perfectly standard farming practices for cruelty through sheer ignorance and no malice.

Don't be afraid OP if it's genuine cruelty all farmers would like to see the issue reported.

The farmer may have requested it not be reported as it's a non issue !

District Vveterinaty Office of the Depatment of Agriculture always treat cases sensitively, maybe too sensitively in my opinion, report it anyway, they'll decide what to do.

If you asked the farmer would he like you to arrange for him to get a rectal exam he would probably say please don't do that.
It doesn't necessarily he needs a rectal exam.

I don't think many farmers would say go ahead and report me even where they are doing nothing wrong.

It would be very easy for me to say exactly what this farmer has done but believe me you would also be shocked. It's not a case of me misreading or not being aware of how animals should be treated. . This is a deliberate cruel act to livestock. And a major attempt to cover it all up.

I'm more shocked that you won't say it.

It does make me wonder how bad it is. Depending on who you ask common practices could be unspeakable cruelty.

If it's so bad and deliberate that it can't be spoken of on an internet forum then surely the OP should've gone to the guards immediately and had the cruelty stopped rather than looking about where to report.

Leave the guards where they are, when someone thats farming properly all their life does something unusual, it's time to look at their mental state not summonse them
DVO are often sorting these cases

God, what planet are you living on? Do you listen to any news? It's full of stories about our corrupt, useless, mé féiner guards.

Contact the Dept of Agriculture and ask for details of what section you should contact to report this.

Animals need our help so that humans treat them well - they can't do it themselves.

Your question has been answered. Without further details there's nothing to discuss.
