Implant vs Pulling

    Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here has any experience of this.

Two days ago I had severe pain in my bottom right molar, went to the dentist and he informed me I needed a root canal. I have started the first phase of that, I have to go back next week to have it completed and then fitted with a crown later on.

Here's my predicament, I have also had root canal on my bottom left and before I was able to get it crowned it cracked so now I'm faced with either pulling it or getting an implant.

An implant costs in the region of €3,000, add to this the cost of root canal and crown and it's likely to cost me €4,500. I'm just not sure if two teeth are worth that to me.

Anyone here have any experience of something similar, I'm just hoping to get a some advice from people that might be missing a molar and how it affects eating or other aspects of their lives. Thanks in advance for the help

You won't miss one tooth or two teeth in the short term. The long term is the problem. If one tooth is missing it may increase pressure on the others.

You really need to talk to the dentist about it.

I think good teeth are a good investment for old age. I would rather have teeth and be poor than have no teeth and be rich. I spent more than what you are talking about a few years ago and have no regrets. Implants are a great technology.

The expenditure will be spread over a period. There is some tax you can claim back.

The prices you are talking about seem a little strong but it really depends on what you need.

I imagine you will need to get that tooth pulled in any case and then you have the choice of getting the implant or not. You could defer getting the implant if that helps with the financing. But talk to the dentist and talk to him frankly about your concerns.

I had an implant done for E1250 or therabouts, can also get about E200 back in tax. That was in dublin and I was very happy about it. Believe me, I wouldnt have been paying the 3k or whatever some of these places want. Id have just left the gap with that kind of money...

    Where was that?

if you can afford it, get the implant. not only will it put more pressure on all your teeth by missing one molar but the tooth infront and behind will drift toward each other and the upper opposing tooth will drift down. loosing one tooth doesn't seem to bad but it really does affect the mouth a lot more than people realise. 3k is definitely on the upper end of the scale. you should really be looking at 2-2.5 max. then take the 20% tax back off. when choosing where to go just be sure they are a fully qualified periodontist and not someone who has just done a quickie 1 week course!!
