    Hi there,

Quick question - wondering what traffic is like generally on N7 outbound in the morning from Red Cow? I know it's heavy coming the other direction, but looking to the commute to Newbridge in the morning from Dublin and back in the evening. Wondering am i going 'against the traffic'

    Many thanks

Well you wont be winning by going against the traffic...its all busy enough but greatly improved in my own opinion. There are pockets in patches in both directions but all ok really all being said. I used to come up to the red cow and hit the north m50 and now I do the same and hit the south m50 and its much of a muchness. there is a bottle neck at naas where lanes merge outbound but you might as well sit back and relax and listen to the radio :)

    Many thanks, much appreciated.

I suppose i'm just trying to get a sense of average times. I've a short commute in Dublin, with option to cycle. An option to up and down the N7 every day for possibly better job.

I travel a bit on it, so if it's the typical 'could be 45 minutes could be 90 minutes' some days it would worry me

If you're going against the rush hour traffic you'll be fine I'd imagine once you get onto the N7 - but getting there in the first place may be an issue depending on where you live.

Would be coming onto m50 at J12 Ballyboden. So would be three M50 junctions to m7.

    It's not looking positive....

It's the uncertainty which is the worst

From doing it for a while last year from ballinteer junction it is not a problem.

Traffic going north on m50 was never too bad unless there was an accident.

From m50 to Naas millennium Park was about 30 minutes. I can't remember any time there was a delay going south on n7m7 at 8am/8.30am

Thank you, good to know. Do you return by the same route in the evening?

I can't imagine you'll have a problem. Even if the M50 was blocked, just go via the Tallaght bypass and come out at N7 J2 south or vice versa in the evening. I've done that myself lots of times :)

Also make sure you're listening to 103.2 on the radio for traffic updates every few minutes and have the Google app on your phone as it will proactively warn you of delays once it gets to know your route. It automatically tells me before I leave what the traffic is like.

Very much appreciated. Still a tough decision, but this is a positive!

No worries... if possible I'd suggest you do one or two runs in the morning over the next few weekdays to see how you get on and scout different routes.

M50 north to J9 and then on to Naas
M50 north/J12 to J11 Tallaght and via the bypass to N7 J2 South

You can also go a little further down the Tallaght bypass and get out to the N7 via Citywest but this would probably be busier at the times you're talking about.

One other thing I'd add.. make sure you factor in the extra cost of fuel and wear and tear on the car (tyres, extra servicing costs etc) into your decision :)

Definitely will all right, my worry is the unknown wet December morning/ afternoon with the creche run. In around Dublin, on a bike is a close to guarantee commute you could get. The variables are the issue

Well once you get onto the N7 you won't have an issue. It'll still be busy but you will be going against the massive volumes in both cases.

Put it this way... I can usually do it in about an hour from further south than you're going between 9 and 10am... and that's going with the traffic volume :)

Definitely scout it out and try and work out a few alternative routes to get to to/from the N7 though.
