Hydrogen-powered cars like this one may be commonplace in the future.
On July 18, BP and GE announced plans to jointly develop up to 15 new hydrogen power plants for generating electricity over the coming decade. The hydrogen will be derived from fossil fuels, including coal and natural gas. While the plants will emit greenhouse gases, the companies will employ carbon capture technologies they claim will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 90 percent. Although the operations will not be pollution-free, some environmentalists welcome the companies’ investment in hydrogen technology as a key development in bringing about a hydrogen economy.

    That article is ridiculous.
Just because the large oil companies and most governments need something that is easy to tax, doesn't mean we need to move away from EVs

"Big Oil and Big Government". Oh oh.... *backs slowly away*

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Sorry, I frequent the conspiracy theories forum a bit, the phrasing does get quite ubiquitous

this was created as a tounge in cheek to the other threads stating that the end is nigh for petrol and diesel

Ahh I got that, but anytime EV acolytes in play, you just never know. It's like clicking on a thread about Mac V PC/Beatles V The Stones/Blur V Oasis and so on. Mind you, all handy if insomnia looms and you require a soporific :D

Don't worry the fallback is to have GPS trackers in all cars and variable tolling.

One theory is that you'd pay more for commuting to work on busy roads than driving on empty roads at 4 am.

It been working for years in Germany.

In January 2005 a new toll system was introduced on the 12,000km of German autobahn for all trucks with a maximum weight of 12t and above. The new toll system, called LKW-MAUT, is a governmental tax for trucks based on the distance driven in kilometres, number of axles and the emission category of the truck (the average charge is €0.13.5 per kilometre, which was increased in September 2007). The tax is levied for all trucks using German autobahns, whether they are full or empty, foreign or domestic.
