Stains on worktop

I went to a friend's house on Sat night and his partner was showing us stains that have appeared on a recently installed wooden worktop. She claims that they weren't there initially, they almost look like patches of resin or glue that dust has stuck to. They don't come off with a wet cloth or even a scrubber. Has anybody ever encountered this before?

It wouldn't be sap being released from the timber would it? Is it still tacky?

What type of wood is it , and what type of finish is on it

It's pine, there's a varnish finish on it. The marks seemed to be raised from the surface when you rub your finger on it. The owner swears that they appeared weeks after the installation.

I recently bought old hand made pine dresser, redone it by sanding and varnishing throughout, after the week or so similar patches to ones you explained, sticky 1-2 cm in diameter have appeared in couple of places.

Seems like some leftover sap seeped through after I stripped the wood bare, pine in my opinion wouldn't be the best wood for furniture especially for the exposed surfaces, even if treated well before like in my case, patches may appear :(

Pine would be unusual for a worktop, was it sold as a pine worktop?, probably the heat indoors brought the resin to the surface, white spirit will dissolve the resin, put some on a cloth and rub it over the patches
