    Hi all,

So the dipstick casing on my 03 Opel Agila broke recently. It shore along where it inserts into the sump pump, leaving the external part as one piece and the internal part has fallen into the sump. I've sourced a new casing but I'm wondering if I need to take apart the sump to get out any bits that are lost inside?

    How big are the bits??

Are they small enough to drain out through the sump plug??

If not, I would say yes, you should remove the sump and take out the bits.

Cheers. Not sure at the moment. When I get the replacement I should have some idea of the size of the bit left inside. I'll see then about getting it out the plug.

Is it a big job to remove and open the sump?

It's probably not a big job, but it's messy and you need to get a new gasket so it won't leak after you replaced sump.

How to video for another car but it's usually always the same procedure.

Can you get under the car safely to have a good look at the sump before you start (if you do decide to remove it ).
    * See how accessible all bolts are - there are usually one or two
    awkward ones .
*See what else has to come off - does the exhaust go back under the sump for
example , will part of it have to come down (rusty/seized bolts or nuts
    common here).

Thanks for all the replies. I'll probably get the garage to do it. I've only got on the street parking and would probably have to buy the tools so it's not really economical.

Anybody know what kind of cost I should expect? An hours labor + gasket?

    Moved out from DIY

Ring 3/4 local places and get quotes for dropping the sump.
Once it's off may as well inspect everything they can see, oil lifter etc.
