Super-middleweight world champion Andre Dirrell's uncle launched into a frenzy of punches on opponent Jose Uzcategui after his nephew's win by disqualification on Saturday night.

In chaotic scenes at the MGM National Harbor in Maryland, trainer Leon Lawson entered the ring to attack a stunned Uzcategui following the fight for the interim IBF belt.

The Venezuelan was hit with a left hook by Lawson, who followed up with his right hand having stormed his corner to spark a brawl.

Uzcategui's adviser Sean Gibbons told reporters that he would file charges for assault after the incident.

Uzcategui was taken to the trauma center at MedSTAR Washington Hospital in Washington DC for evaluation, according to ESPN. He was released a few hours later.

Local police are seeking Lawson for questioning on counts of first and second-degree assault.

Punch wasn't that late, he was mid combo. I recon Dirrell could have continued but his corner told him to stay down. As for the fat uncle, should be charged for that. Some chin all the same..

Looking at the clip it looked like a sucker punch? Should never be allowed near a boxing ring again.

Yet again the Dirrell clan in a volatile situation following some pathetic acting while looking for a way out.

These Dirrells are so bloody high-strung, overly emotional and downright unhinged I just hope either the book is thrown at them or promoters just freeze them out and they get no work. This is a tough, hard sport that should have no room for these type of gobsh*tes. Can you imagine what would have happened if the sucker punch was the other way around? Dirrell would have gone down like a tonne of bricks and would be in a ten year self-induced 'coma', while they would have needed police from three separate states to quell the ensuing week-long riot.

The DQ was marginal, as though the third punch was after the bell it was the third of a fast combination when he had his opponent trapped in the corner. Needless to say though, Dirrell made a meal of it once he realised what was likely to happen if he played up.

Big plaudits to Uzcategui for keeping his cool and not milking the situation.

Butler's next bout earned him infamy on November 23, 2001 at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, New York. The bout was a charity event to benefit surviving New York firemen and police officers of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and was televised live on ESPN2. After losing by unanimous decision to Richard "The Alien" Grant, Butler had his gloves removed before the announcement of the winner, Grant then went to Butler's side of the ring for an expected exchange of congratulations. Instead, Butler sucker punched Grant, nailing a bare handed right hook to his jaw. Grant suffered a temporarily dislocated jaw and a lacerated tongue that required 26 stitches.[2] Butler was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Butler was later convicted and served four months at Riker's Island detention facility.[3]

I think what happened in the fight last night was worse, marginally, than what Butler did.

Controversy and misfortune never fails to surround Andre Dirrell. A damn shame as there is still a fine boxer beneath it all. I do hope he gets his shot at redemption at DeGale. I felt the scorecards in the first fight were very hard on him.

How do you figure? What Butler did was probably the most despicable thing i've seen in boxing, and that takes some doing.

Dirrell's coach threw a combo and then stood there waiting for the fighter to reply i.e. he wanted to fight as opposed to just throwing one punch.

And of course we missed it!

Just got there as fight was already on and box office closed so spent another round talking down the scalpers to $50 for this ticket!

My initial view of Russell's first fight since destroying Pajo Hyland wasnt bad but quickly moved over the other side near my cousin which was virtually ringside:

Although we only saw 4 rounds it was a good scrap with Escandon taking some punishment and despite being 3 inches smaller still was a gladiator in there. But Russell's power and hand speed were a cut above. To be that near and hear the leather just gives you an appreciation for what they do for a living.

It was brief but the TKO was coming which is the first time Escandon has been stopped and after Russell apologised for the near riot earlier. We didnt know what he was on about until after! He also said he wanted to avenge his only loss to Lomachenko and also mentioned Santo Cruz.

Russell v Frampton could be a runner but doubt our man will stay in that division.

Enjoyable to see a home town World Champ in action. Casino is well worth a visit too. Great atmosphere and buzz around saturday night there.

    Dan Rafael hard at work!
