I saw Colossal today and it were proper amazing, wayyyyyy better than the trailer showed. It's way darker than you'd think, it's the perfect example of a weird, original concept used deftly to tell a great, personal story with very interesting and deeply flawed characters. Making it even better is fantastic performances by Hathaway and Sudeikis, plus a great sense of humor that's peppered into the mix. Highly reccomended.

Caught this last night, really enjoyed it - as the OP said, much darker than expected

I caught this last night and really enjoyed it; a lot darker than I had expected in places, and very surefooted in handling the various tonal shifts. Great character development and performances from the leads, too.

Have to say I enjoyed it up to a point. A very specific point where I thought it could have pushed on and become something more. Instead it just delivered a pretty unoriginal and bland ending.
I thought what we'd get was some sort of commentary on addiction. I thought the 3 lads she was hanging out with would end up being 3 parts to her personality. The a-hole, the addict and the ineffectual nice guy (person). That the memory from her childhood was some sort of traumatic one that fed a breakdown she was experiencing during the film. After all her addiction was there and gone just like that. And her addiction was properly dealt with at the same time that Garths addiction was exposed and his part in the film ended.

It was that scene in the film, where we see the childhood memory that sets the whole thing off, where it all turned for me.

Her addiction is still there at the end of the film
when the barmaid asks her what she wants to drink. i wouldnt agree with the idea that her addiction is gone and dealt with. The very last shot of the film is her squirming with the choice of whether to have a drink or not.

I enjoyed it anyway. It was something different to watch and i liked the idea of it. There's not too many back humor sci-fi's out there. But I dunno did sudekis' voice annoy me a bit though, there were parts i couldn't hear what he was actually saying cos his voice was too low!!!
One small gripe was how she could afford a ticket to Seoul despite being practically destitute. but thats being picky.

    7/10

When I said her addiction was gone I meant more as a plot point. It was central to who she was and then suddenly no longer required and dumped until that last scene.

Seeing as she couldnt afford furniture and only bought a blow up mattress then maybe, who knows. As I said, it was only a small issue.

Excellent concepts but jesus there was some stupid plot turns......

Could've been excellent but for some poor choices......
Ending good the bits beforehand needed some tying together
