New car - Thoughts

I'm in the very lucky/nice situation where I'm thinking of buying a new car in the new year.
Currently thinking merc e class, BMW 5 series, Audi A6, Volvo s90.

Current car is a 08 Volvo S80 2.l5 petrol which I like a lot (cruiser, great take off, does roll on corners) but tax, petrol and insurance bill every year is annoying. Saying that I got it at a very good price 7 years ago (very low mileage as well).

Pretty much have wrote off the Audi (feels outdated vs the others) and while I do really like the S90 the probable depreciation hit bs the others scares me.

Was tending to the e class but reviews on the new version 5 series are very good. Have test drive both and am "conflicted". Also, I do like my gadgets but extras cost an arm and leg (which brings me back to s90 where most of the stuff I want is standard).

Has anyone been in this situation, which way did you go and why?

Assume the new A6 will be around by the time you're buying. I do like the Volvo for the rare factor but for me it would be 5 series, carbon black, 20" wheels, looks the business.

We can only state our own preferences and no car is stand out better than the others. See what deals you can negotiate and come up with your own preferences based on those deals. You mentioned depreciation, all.of these cars are 50k+ and you can expect to lose half the value on them all in 3 years or so. If you like gadgets and tech you have probably correctly ruled out the older Audi. New s90 is an impressive looking machine but I was never in one.

S90 is a nice looking car passed one today, in fairness merc BMW and Volvo all look nice these days, Audi does as well but a bit dated, I guess if you're unsure go for whoever. Will give the extras at the best price

Never drove or was in any of them, but one thing I noticed for sure - New volvo s90 has freaking amazing presence on the road, you notice that big boat from far away. Wheres audi and bmw became so common and bland these days.

If it would be my money, I would test drive them all starting s90 and most likely would get s90 anyway. :)

Just looked up the S90, and the choice is either Diesel or Diesel :(

And only the D5 would be quick enough for my liking.

Not that any of that matters for the OP, just checking it out myself.

Drove the s90 D4 , 520d and e220d last weekend as per other thread I started.
The s90 was lovely car but not quite as sharp as the other two.
Dealer experience on the day not as good as in rival garages either. Couldn't give us a cost to change on the day either.
When he came back with a price for car that listed the same as the other two before the 4K reductions Volvo are offering he was 3.5k more expensive than the 5 series and 4.5k more than e class both of which come with service packs for that price and the Volvo does not.
I actually expected the Volvo to come in cheaper than the others as assumed they would be more keen to get them on the road as they are lower volume sellers than the other two.

I was in a similar situation recently, weighing up a nearly new executive vs a used exec. It became pretty clear very quickly that any savings in tax, fuel and insurance will be far outweighed by depreciation.

My advice is that if you like the Volvo, keep it - still a great car and unfortunately worth very little so cost to change is high.

If you're keeping a car for 6+ years, then depreciation won't be a big issue.

For me, I'd be looking at whoever has the best warranty as with the amount of electrics in cars these days, issues out of warranty can become expensive.

In my own experience Bmw don't score very highly on known issues when the car is out of warranty.

Jaguar? - 3 years unlimited mileage warranty, + 3 years servicing + 3 years roadside assistance

Maybe we have different balance sheets but you're talking easily €5k/year in depreciation over 6 years on a new 5 series. Finance costs are on top of that too unless cash is there to pay.

If the OP wants a new car, great, but many people spend tens of thousands just to save a few quid a year on tax so that shouldn't be a reason!

OP, if you do go ahead with a new car, the previous poster makes a great point re warranties as these cars are becoming hugely complicated. I know BMW offer good extended warranties and if I was buying a new one I'd fully intend to keep a warranty on the car for the duration of my ownership. Problem is they aren't cheap, from previous quotes on the last 3 series I owned you're talking about more than the road tax on the Volvo :pac:

I may have phrased it wrong - what I meant is that if you are keeping a car for over 6 years, then the difference in value after that won't be huge between the various options the op was looking at.

The bmw may have a value of €20k and the merc €19k - one small issue covered under warranty with one and not the other could negate that.

So for me, after experience, the best warranty is the biggest selling point for my next purchase.

Have you looked at the Jaguar XF and Lexus GS as well.

Another option might be the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. Sure its smaller than the cars your currently looking at. it is an excellent car that is sublime to drive and and that you would never get bored of driving or owning.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

This old annoying chestnut again! Why do some posters insist on sticking this rubbish in. It's up there with the old dpf and dmf being dropped in where theses posters wouldn't know the difference between a dpf and an apple tart.

OP has a 10 year old car, do you really think the only difference between a 10 year old Volvo and a new Volvo is tax saving?

Where did I say tax is the only difference? OP stated that they really like the car and finds tax/insurance/petrol annoying - all I was saying is don't be under the illusion that a new car will save you money as it won't, however if you want to buy a new car as you're tired/bored of current car, go for it.
Those S80s are pretty reliable and the 2.5t is a peach.
