Godfather unavailable for Communion

Just wondering what is the protocol when a godfather is not available for the first communion. It's been a long time since I made mine so the memory is a bit hazy about the activities of the godmother/father for this.

I don't recall doing anything at my god childs communion.i was there but don't think I had a part in the ceremony.
Confirmation you need a sponsor alright but usually just a parent

Is it not confirmation that the god parent usually attends as sponsor? Communion is just immediate family only & depending on the size of the church even that can be limited!

My godmother lived abroad. Dont think my godfather was there. My memory of my first communion was that my brother announced that he wanted rabbit. He got chicken. I got Seven Pounds. Just go with your immediate family.

There is no protocol. There is no need for godparents to be at First Communion. Or Confirmation. Or Marriage!

*Generally* people choose a godparent to be their sponsor at confirmation time but for communion there's no more need or expectation for godparents to be there than a stranger on the street.

A stranger in the street ?. There may be no official role for a Godparent the first holy communion, but it would be a pretty poor Godparent that would miss such an important day in the spiritual life of their Godchild. The Godfather in the OP's case has to do best man, so he has a decent reason not to be there.

By the time of my communion both my godparents had become estranged from my family. So my brother-in-law stood in for it on the day. Nobody knew (or cared) and we didn't bother telling the priest. It's not a big deal so don't worry about it OP. Have a good day!

Surely you're talking about confirmation? You dont need anybody to "stand in" at a communion

I'm talking about my communion. I simply mean that he replaced my godparents on the day, not that he 'stood' for me in the sense of a confirmation.

Otherwise I would have been the only person without godparents. He stood with me for photos, etc. and just generally made a fuss and got involved. It meant a lot to my parents and, looking back, it meant a lot to me.

There is no explicit religious need for the godparent on the day of Communion.

What about the child's godmother? If you want a godparent to be present, could you ask her?

God parents have no rule in the first holy communion, I had two recently, my own child and my own godson.
Nice to have a photo taken with the god parents but that's about it.
