Hi, I have a Purebreed (PB) bull calf from a PB unregistered cow (only found out she was PB as part of Genomics scheme) and I'm wondering can I register the calf to add value (keep as bull)? Thanks

    Maybe ring the breed society

I think you'll have to register the cow as well, as whelan says society will tell you what's what.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Go to the ICBF website and look up the bull. Go to the 'Pedigree' tab then and you will see the back breeding. It will tell you if the mother is 100% limousin. You can check the cow then, with her name or Tag nonumber, on the Irish Limousin Society herdbook. If it's not there then she is not registered. Do the same then with the grandmother.

If the grandmother is registered, then you will have to register the mother and then the calf. This will cost a few bob so may not be worth doing.

Depending on breed society you may be unable to register. I know of folks that sold pedigree cattle as commercial as they did not want any come back if ever an issue in future.

I would also think that just because cattle are pedigree it doesn't necessarily mean they should be used for pedigree breeding.

Surely some are not good enough and should be really only be used for commercial breeding or maybe even sold for beef. In either case registering is of no benefit.

In the OP's situation even if he does sell the bull calf for breeding it'll probably be for a commercial herd. How much added value will registering bring if he can provide the pedigree and prove the bull is PB.

Lot of pedigree cattle that have certs that are poor...but folks still reg them. If selling a cert does make a difference check difference between pbnr and pedigrees prices.
