(04 Bora) Do I need a single or double sided serpentine belt?

    Hi folks,
So as the title suggests, I'm in some doubt as to which belt to get. I've a 04 Bora TDi, and the belt decided to up and disintegrate somewhere around Kinvara last night, so I've no belt to compare it to. The Haynes manual is no use, as it just gives me diagrams for both with and without aircon. All I can find out is that I need the one that turns the aircon compressor as well, but I don't know if I need single or double sided ones.

Micksgarage is no use, and indeed they are recommending two different length belts for use with aircon, which is... unseemly. Most are offering the 1195mm version, so I'm just presuming that's the one I need, but I'm not positive by a long shot.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated,
    Cheers,
    WP

Is your Bora petrol or diesel ?
Some of the diesels had 2 belts - a long one for alternator , power steering, cooling fan etc and a shorter one for the air con only ; both driven from the crankshaft pulley.

    It's a TDi, 100BHP.
So if it's got two belts on the crank, I presume that pulley would be twice as wide as the others, so as to accommodate two belts? I've not lifted it yet, but will be doing so on Monday and can check then.

    Cheers for your help.

It would appear that your car has only one drive belt - the longer one if your car has air con (as it has an extra pulley to go around) , the shorter one if it doesn't ; if there was a separate belt for the air con it would be listed .

If you want to pm reg or vin. no. I'll look up the vw parts catalogue and see what's listed.

Having put it up on stands, I took a look at the pulleys, and this is what I'm guessing the belt diagram to be. Would this be accurate? See attached.

    Cheers.

Belt appears to have very little contact with AC pulley - and AC puts quite a load on when working so belt would be very likely to slip.
Is there no idler pulley , for example , to bring the belt more in contact with AC - maybe between the PS and AC and a bit to the left ?

Aye, I'd been wondering that myself too. Not that I can see, no. But maybe that's the problem, that the idler broke and fell off?

Have a look at this, is it anything like yours - apparently AC is driven by the back (flat) of the belt.
Does the AC pulley have grooves in it or is it flat ?

    Computer says single wet-paint...

    Along with this advisory: "caution: either 038 109 119 s or 038 109 119 p are supplied."

That's the timing belt ; wet-paint said it was the alternator belt that broke.

The ac pulley is grooved, but unlike the link you supplied, the tensioner pulley is flat, so I went with a single sided belt, which the mechanic recommended. It's easy enough to go and get the correct one if I'm wrong, but I wanted to try and figure it out myself first.

Cheers for the image Irishfire, but yep, twas the aux belt that went.

    1.9TDI with A/C = double ribbed belt
    1.9TDI without A/C = normal ribbed belt
