    Hi malinheader,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Pay As You Go electricity is indeed available from Electric Ireland.

There is a daily service charge of 29 cent for the Electric Ireland Smarter Pay As You Go meter and there is also a bonus credit for choosing this option.

To avail of Smarter PAYG, just contact the PAYG Sales team on 1850 30 50 95.

If there is any further information you need from us, please let us know.

    Kind regards,
    Una

    Hi Una,

I just bought a house with a prepay electricity meter from Electric Ireland. Can I have it changed to a normal post pay meter? Or can the PAYG meter be converted for a traditional postpay method?

Finally, if it is possible to use the prepay meter for postpay, do I have to sign up to a contract to do so?

    Thanks,
    Ciaran

    Hi Ciaranis,

Thank you for your interest in Electric Ireland.

Once the meter is deactivated, the property will be reverted to bill-pay mode.

You will need to call our colleagues in the Pay As You Go team on 1850 372 372. They are available from 8am until 8pm, Monday to Saturday.

A contract is only required if you wish to apply for savings. Direct debit customers can avail of savings of up to 5.5% with a further 3% if you have both gas and electricity.

Once your meter has been switched to bill-pay mode, you can apply for savings by calling the Sales team on 1850 305 090.

You can see more about these savings here.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife

    Hi Aoife,

So can the prepay meter be used as a standard meter? Because there is no other meter in the house.

    Thanks, Ciaran

    Hi Ciaranis,

Thank you for getting back to us.

There are several types of electricity Pay As You Go meters, although any electricity Pay As You Go meter can be reset to bill-pay.

In some cases, the ESB Networks meter will be replaced meaning the Pay As You Go meter is the only meter at the property. This appears to be the case in your situation. Once it is deactivated, you will no longer need to top it up. Bills will be sent regularly instead. There is no requirement to exchange the meter.

Other Pay As You Go customers will have an indoor device and continue to have an independent ESB Networks meter. These customers can deactivate their device and get it removed, if necessary, as the ESB Networks meter will work as normal.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife
