Fear of dentists

So how do I get over the fear of dentists? I need to go.

Last time I was at the dentist she told me that I have plaque and it needs to be removed. Was lying back on the chair and she sprayed the numbing stuff all over my face and mouth. Scratched at my mouth while her assistant was using this water/sucky thing, can't explain, I was in extreme panic. Dentist tells me in the middle of this nightmare that it's my fault for not going to the dentist more regularly. Then at the end she says it usually costs 30 to do this but your teeth took extra work so I'm charging you 50. I just wanted to get out of there so I paid the 50 to the receptionist and ran out of there.

Now I had a fear of dentists before this but as you can tell it's got worse after. What can I do? How can I find a decent dentist?

I might have to but I want a nice dentist. Are people allowed to recommend them by pm on here?

Had a bad experience many years ago while in for cleaning etc so hadnt gone to a Dentist in years as a result. In hindsight I should have changed dentist back then. Anyway fast forward until this year, had a toothache earlier in the year, I let it go as long as possible due to the fear of going to the dentist. Was no way I was going back to that same dentist again so I googled dentists in my area etc and then searched for them on facebook to see if they had any reviews etc. This helped me choose a new dentist for which I cant thank enough, Was told I had to get a molar out, I explained my bad experience to them and they were happy to refer me to have the extraction done via sedation. Have also had my teeth cleaned by the new dental clinic and it had been a different experience also compared to years ago. Maybe the previous dentist years ago was rough etc. All I can say is, use the various social media tools available these days to review Dental Clinics in your area, you will be guaranteed to find a new dentist that will ensure you are nice and relaxed while doing any work and will not be rushing to get you in and out the door as quick as possible after all you are booked in for a 20/30min slot which allows ample time for any planned treatment to be completed these days. Thats my experience and how I overcame the situation and am happy now to know that I have had my teeth checked and in good health.

Social media and web reviews are all great, but sometimes they do not tell the full story. It is very easy to get rave reviews for a place by using professional media companies etc

I would say the most reliable reference to a dental practice is personal recommendation by someone you know who has attended an established clinic or dentist with a proven track record. Successful dentistry is not measures in days/ weeks /months/ years, but Decades....
