    Hello,

The red battery light has come on on an 06 2.0 D4D diesel avensis. I've checked with a multi meter and results are.

    Engine off 12.5 volts
    Idle 11.8 volts
    Idle lights on 11.7 volts
reved to about 2000RPM 11.9/12.2 volts

Seems like alternator to me. Just wanted to get a second opinion.

Yeah, should be 14.5v or thereabouts with engine on

Will you change the alternator yourself?

Was just looking at changing it myself. If it was bolt off bolt on I would but seems you need to remove the drive shaft to get it out so might be best left to someone more knowledgeable

Not sure whether to get new, second hand or refurbished. Doesn't seem to be anyone in the north west that does rebuild them so will probable get second hand.

    Thank Biko

    Try Westronicsirl@gmail.com
He sells repair kits but is also a rebuilder of auto electrics.
He is based in Mayo IIRC.

A new alternator would be ideal but they're crazy money from Toyota, try an auto factors they'll be more realistic. It's an absolute pig of a job to do without a lift not for the faint hearted. I wouldn't go the secondhand route they rarely last any longer than a few months.

I've been ringing around a few places. Ive ruled out a new one. just to expensive!

The problem at the minute is is my car the new one or the old one. They seem to have change in 06. One fella said if they have the indicators in the mirrors it's the one (which mine has) an other fella said some of the older ones had them to. Is there a way to find out for sure.

Mine has indicator mirrors, built in sat nav, 6-speed these seem to point to the newer one.

    Go to https://www.catcar.info/toyota/?lang=en

Enter VIN number, click on result, go to engine section, click on alternator - alternator assy part number (5+5 digits/letters) is the one you can cross check for compatibility.

Pig of a job is right! Done mine (03) with just ordinary jacks, took two and a half hours. You'll need a good socket and bar to get the driveshaft nut off, ideally a 3/4 drive.
There is a carrier bearing halfway along the driveshaft that needs removing, and the bolts were both awkward to get at, and very tight.

There's no guarantee that your battery isn't also on it's last legs as well, I found mine was.

Also found out why the air-con was ineffective. Shorter fanbelt fitted, that doesn't go round the compressor pulley at all!

06 on has timing chain and up to 06 has timing belt.

There's a guy in Dungarvan, Waterford that specializes in Alternator and Starter repairs.
I was having problems with my own 2009 Toyota Avensis diesel.
Battery light came on and paid over 450 to motorfactors for new unit, paid mechanic to fit it and after 3 days the battery light was back on again.
My friend gave me this guys number and he told me to bring the original alternator which would be better to repair, as he explained i had probably bought a Chinese/spurious unit which can be very unreliable.
He rebuilt the old unit and fitted it - all for 250 and the cars been going great since.
If your interested i can pass on his contact information
