What to do for the summer?

I'm just finished my first year of college last Friday, I've been home since and I'm bored, well more restless, I just hate being at home at 20 year's old with nothing to do.

I don't want to be here, I can't seem to find any summer work/part time work so I just end up getting nagged to either A) Find work or B) Do some work around the house, which I do only to be told 'sure what's stopping you doing this too, you're not at anything'.. which is true and why I want to go somewhere, do something.

I'd have loved to have gone to the US working at a summer camp but I think I'm a bit late and I've repeats in August..

So please no sarcastic answers, I'm getting enough of them at home.
What could/should a 20 year old do who has no job and who doesn't want to spend his summer sitting at home do to stop himself going insane?

I missed out on the US when I was younger. Not great.

Sorry to hear about the repeats.

Could you volunteer somewhere? I don't know what your field is? Perhaps you could contact a lecturer and see if they need help. What about a summer internship or an apprenticeship?

The other options would be travelling or getting a job. I know you don't want to hang around but a job definitely would meet the criterion of "Doing something" and you'd likely be able to save a fair bit for next year.

Where is home? If you're in the middle of nowhere, are there friends or family you could stay with in a location where you're more likely to be able to pick up some summer work?

Borrow a tent, and walk to somewhere you've always wanted to see. Or borrow a bike and a sleeping bag, and youth-hostel your way round Ireland. It can be done very cheaply. Travelling is fun and very educational!

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/jul/15/how-to-work-for-your-festival-ticket. I know that is the UK, so for one in Ireland. How to get free or nearly free tickets to a festival.

This would also help with getting experience for getting a job.

The US is not necessarily a missed opportunity. You can go wherever you want in the EU.

Go to France and get a job on a construction site or in a factory, meet some French girls, travel around a bit (maybe South of France), rent a car, have a good time and come home with a few quid in your pocket.

Or have a really good time and come home skint.

Another option is WWOOFing - look it up - you go and stay on a farm or similar in a foreign country and complete a few hours work each day in return for accommodation and food.
It would be great craic and if I had a few weeks spare I would definitely do it!
You'd meet some very interesting people and get to experience a country in a different way than if you were just on holiday.

Every country has their own website.

You don't really get paid doing that but it might be good for a few weeks to meet people and have a bit of craic.

Well if you have a bit of money, you could go interrailing around Europe or like me book one flight somewhere like Amsterdam and get buses (megabus is very cheap) or trains from different cities in different countries to different cities in different countries.. And fly back from different countrie..basically make a starting point and explore until you reach the end point... Europe is your oyster..it's the best thing I ever done.. Travelled 28 countries within in the EU and outside of it too...message me if any questions :D

No but it's free food and accommodation which would be the bulk of the OP's expenses whilst away

Besides wild camping the best value way to do this is to find a hostel that has camping in the grounds its the best of both worlds with the sort of weather we have, you can use the hostel kitchen facilities showers and loos and its very cheap. I meet people doing this on Inishbofin. The only downside is having to carrying the camping gear and slab of beer :)

Where are you from OP. Pay up a general area and you never know someone might have a good idea for you

Possibly also consider getting a bar job in some sunny place like Gran Canaria. The pay is low at maybe about €1000/month but it could be some craic at the same time.

I've always had a dream to head off to Thailand and drive a tuk tuk for the Summer.
Met a few people who did it in Portugal and it looked like a blast.

Also have a look at summer holiday reps in resorts.
