Im in my current job for the past 3 years, placed there by a recruiter.
I want to apply for a new job that i found advertised by the same recruiter.

The recruiter does a lot of work for my current company, so im worried about letting them know im looking to move from my current role.

After all they work for, and are paid by my company, not me so their loyalty will be to the client company.

    Am i being overly cautious?

First thing I'd do is find out if it is possible to apply for the new job. Some recruiters have a policy, that if you were placed in a job by them, you are therefore off limits. You can not be placed in another job on their books, while you remain in employment in the first job. If they don't have that policy, they'll have people bouncing around between jobs, every time they have a row with their boss.

Give them a ring and ask their policy on that. There is no need to give your name. Just tell them that you are making a general enquiry, that if you are placed in a job by them and it doesn't work out, how are you fixed for applying for other jobs on their books.

They wont comment on anything unless i give them my name, so we're at a stalemate and I will not be applying with them.
I presume their thought is i could be a client company assessing their loyalty.

From what I know about recruiters their loyalty is to their bottom line...it is essentially a sales job...

In this case they're potentially getting paid for your new job...and a replacement for your current role.

I have got many mails from recruitment a recruitment agency while in the position they got me and that was a agency that had close business and family ties to the company

As was said above, all they care about is the money coming in.

Be careful - the company I work for uses a recruitment agency, but unbeknownst to many here, the owner of the recruitment agency and our CEO are close friends - I know of at least one person who didn't have their contract renewed after applying for a position through that recruitment agency.

    Apply directly to the company,
ring another recruiter on the desk and ask to speak to them instead of the one who placed you,

its been three years. its not like your just in the door, they had their bonus and would love another by placing you.

It's definitely not uncommon for a recruiter to work with the same person through multiple jobs/employments. This is why you may often receive advertisements or check-ups from the recruiter to see how you're getting on, if you'd be interested in moving on/up, etc.

While it is worth being "cautious" in terms of the confidentiality of it and potential for getting back to your current employer, the reality is that turnover is a natural thing. Sure, an employer may get frustrated with a recruiter if everyone they keep filling leaves in 6 months, but that's not exactly your case here.

Particularly if it is a role that really interests you or is in-line with your desired career path, I'd say go for it (personally).

My and my SO's experience with recruiters is that they actually develop some loyalty to you if you've been "good for them" -- you're actually the one leading to revenue for them, so it's really in their interest to stand up for you if you think about it.

An alternative way of looking at it, is that if the recruiter does a lot of work with your current company, they'll likely get the opportunity to fill your role at your current company if you succeed, which is a double-whammy for them, so again it's in their benefit not to try and screw you over.

it will depend if that company has a contract with your current company.

The recruiter/company that placed me in my current role, once the contract wasnt renewed they were on looking to move me somewhere else

    Ok first up

See if another recruitment company has the job you are interested in. If not, see if the company will take a cv directly.

If not apply via the recruitment company you were hired by. Worst case is they take your cv and leave it on their desk and do nothing. But at least you have tried to get around them first.

But in my experience, once you are in a job 12 months you are fair game for the recruiter to move on (Especially if you approach them). Think of it from their side...you move they get commission....and then they try to hire your replacement and also get commission. Its win-win for them
