Road bike

Looking for a road bike to upgrade from my Giant Defy 2 on a full Tiagra groupset. It will be my first main method of transportation and I'll be using it for 100km spins on a Sunday so I'll be doing ~200km a week or so

Budget is approximately 1,500 euro, including wheels/pedals. I would and have always wanted a full Carbon but not sure if my budget allows for one.

I would like something with a more aggressive geometry/riding position but open minded as I just cycle for recreation

    Suggestions?

Bang on budget, carbon fork, 105 11 speed groupset, hydraulic discs and decent wheelset. It has relaxed geometry so is ideal for commuting as well as weekend spins. It's getting excellent reviews on some of the uk bike forums.

Great reviews. Not carbon but worth considering.

    Only the fork:

    Frame:
Cube’s engineers dug deep into their bag of tricks for this frame. To improve its rigidity, they treated it to X12 quick releases front and rear. Both the frame and the Cube CSL carbon fork have been specifically developed to work with disc brakes.

For the frame material, they chose Cube’s formidable superlite aluminium tubeset, joined with their Smooth Welding process and featuring internal cable routing for clean looks and minimal maintenance.

The Flip Flop adaptor means that either 140mm or 160mm discs can be used on the front wheel. And for winter training, there's even the option of mounting mudguards to keep the spray off.

that's what I read it as.
if it was my money I'd go for the canyon disc even tho it's 20% more than his 1500 budget.

Yeah sorry my mistake. I thought it was carbon frame too which I did actually think was too good to be true.

yeah, it's just that i wouldn't necessarily regard a racy, aggressive road bike as being a good commuter? may be harder to get mudguards, etc., onto.

Frame size for a 183.5cm male, so M/L

Yes, sorry, I'll be using this as my main method of transportation for getting around and I'll be using it for weekend spins too!

What is the opinion on disc brakes on road brakes? I am in two minds myself about them. I heard there's a significant difference in braking, especially when cornering?

I have to say, I prefer the Canyon over the Cube, however, and this is probably being very picky but I am not mad on the colour of them. I love the look but the colour(s) are doing nothing for me!

You shouldn't really be braking while cornering but have all your braking done before the corner.

Disc brakes are considerably better than rim brakes in all circumstances and conditions. They're excellent in wet/rainy conditions and work fairly consistently no matter what the weather unlike rim brakes which are greatly effected in wet weather conditions.

I'm after buying a new winter/wet weather bike with disc brakes and I have to say I'm very impressed with them. Sharp consistent braking all the time with no fade or loss of quality in the wet.

If I were commuting all year round then I would most definitely go for disc brakes for a number of reasons.

    1. Consistent braking regardless of weather conditions.
    2. Almost zero wear on wheels which means wheels should technically never wear out.
    3. Virtually no physical effort required to brake even in emergency situations.

other choices in carbon ultimate non-disc

    https://www.canyon.com/en/road/ultimate/2016/ultimate-cf-sl-7-0.html

even lighter at 7.6kg and cheaper at 1599

If it was my money I'd be taking my 1500 quid straight to donedeal. Medium to large, 54-56 is a huge market, loads and loads of bikes to choose from. Find that guy with loads of money to buy bikes and no time to ride them and you'll pick up something beautiful for 1500 quid that came out of a shop for 3 grand plus.
    :)

Ah it'll take a bit of fishing. But for example:

    https://www.donedeal.ie/bicycles-for-sale/giant-propel-advanced-2/15489675

Been for sale a good while.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/bicycles-for-sale/specialized-roubaix-carbon-racing-bike-56-ultegra/15519963
I bought this same lad's 2016 racing bike for a song, just meant a trip up in the car.

This felt is also for sale a while and without wheels I think closer to a grand is more realistic. Awesomely light bike and full dura ace.

Worth signing up to the various Facebook buy and sell cycling pages too.

Last October I got a 12 month old giant tcr advanced pro, rrp 3599 for about 1500 quid. The bargains are out there and depreciation is your friend :)

Links don't work for me. But pm sent

Edit. Right I see em now. Good want to measure yourself properly so you know what size you want. That cervelo size 58 is a big bike - 6 ft 1 plus. But that bottechia I reckon is for a 5 ft 8/9er

I'd be keeping the defy to commute on personally and getting the other one for the weekends.

You'll get plenty for your budget online, less so in a shop but potentially better service, comeback and customisation and fitting.

Look at Salden.nl for some lovely Wiliers that might be in budget.

Planet X sometimes have the odd curve ball too, got my Guerciotti at a great price last year.

You're right, I'll get the Defy serviced and use it for commuting and doing local trips.

What are the quality of Planet X own brand bikes likes?

afaik, look good for the money but frames aren't that good (on the harsh side of things)
mostly they buy chinese frames and rebrand them instead of getting their own frames made apparently.
