    It's why there will never ever be the prefect middle/long distance race....even the perfect endurance sprint race. 400 and 800

    Maybe throw the 200 in as well. That is paced.

    Matt Fitzgerald's book 'How Bad Do You Want It ?' is an interesting read. He uses anecdotes from champions in various endurance sports to look into the psychology of running and expands on the article linked by the OP. It's not overly scientific but does refer to some published papers.
