So I'm mulling yet again to change my car.
Not sure at which point during the year but I do want to change.
My mileage warrants a diesel but I'd like to go back to a petrol for a while and I'd like something which isn't too hard on fuel and not slow.
My options therefore are quite limited as I don't want less power than what I've got now which is a passat 170bhp.
So I spotted this car for sale not too far from work

    https://www.otomoto.pl/oferta/volkswagen-passat-2-0-tsi-210-km-dsg-highline-salon-polska-fv-vat-ID6yPaJj.html

OK it's in a different language but I'm just looking at the pictures and using Google translate.
I like the look of it and 210 horses seems just fine to me but a bit skeptical automatic will help me here. I suspect the dsg will make its consumption suffer.
But it's also a 10k car and full service history.
Not too gone on the leather but I could get used to it.
Looked at a few reviews and they are a bit mixed and it's mostly down to the consumption.
Some are average mid 40s which is fine for me and some low 30s which could be an issue.
I do about 40k a year with trips around Europe and work.
Would I be mad to entertain this idea?
Anyone got one of these tsi engines?

Looks like a very well specd car.

I don't think I'd be banking on mid 40's from that car. Late 30's could be realistic though. I've no first hand experience, it just seems optimistic.

    Was thinking the same.
Problem is that the engine doesn't seem to have been sold in the passat either in the UK or ireland so reviews are hard to come by.
I get around 6/100km with my passat but I think late 30s would be 7ish?
But no dpf, cheaper servicing costs and less of a danger to the environment.
So I think overall costs would match over a period of time.
Alternative to the tsi is the tdi b7 with again 170.
Would much rather the tsi though.

That's the same engine and gearbox from the Golf GTi. I'd say low 30s is what you would get from it, maybe 35ish on long trips. Like anything if you push it on then expect it to drop below 30mpg.

Are they a reliable engine in the golf? I mean does it suffer from the timing chain issue?

I'm not sure but it does seem to be from the same family of engines as the 1.4 and 1.8 which had weak timing chain tensioners:

    Read it there.
Seeing as that car linked is on 240k I'd be thinking that it could be one of the cars not affected.
The 122 would probably be a safer bet but dropping near on 50 horses seems pointless to me.
Must test drive it.. which I know is a bad idea.

The 1.4 TSi can suffer the same so the risk is the same as far as I see.

You know the 35.5k is BEFORE VAT? So it is 44k...

Going to take a look at it on Saturday.
Was going to see if he'd let me take it for 24 hours so I test the car properly.
I know what his answer will be already but thought I'd leave my car as collateral.
