Sounds like a bit of a PR hatchet job on BMW by its competitors? I smell a rat...these are all completely different models of varying ages. Why would it all be some sudden link of fires- it makes no sense. If there was an obvious pattern of same models and engines then yes.
German cars are not as well regarded in the US, Audi still have an image problem re quality- the complete opposite to here really.

Hot catalytic convertors in a hot dry environment imho. .....fuel or oil stained asphalt or drive: park a 600 degree exhaust 150mm over it with no airflow and.....

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Since the fires seem to start in the boot area, I'd say battery / battery terminal is the culprit.

They've done a recall on battery terminals in 2013.

BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle.
