    5 Series (520D) v E (E220D) class thoughts

I've been considering a 2014 ish 520D and have test driven a couple. Thought I should at least look at a comparable E-Class so drove one the other day.

It was interesting to compare the two. First impressions of the Merc when you sit into it is that while it is a nice place to sit, it feels a generation behind the BMW. The switchgear is all over the place, lots of small buttons, the Command system feels like a rubbish version of the iDrive and the dials are pretty old school.

Then you drive it and find that right away it feels smoother and more refined than the BMW, less road noise, superbly isolated suspension, very comfortable with great seats. It feels so solid on the road.
I was really impressed with the drive. But despite having a nice light cream interior with wood and aluminum details, the BMW interior is miles better and that counts for a lot.

But to drive the E-Class shaded it for me, really lovely, comfortable car to drive.

though decision , buy a car you don't like interior of but love how it drives or vice versa?
The fact the 5 series is so common would put me off it unless it had an M pack or something , when a car is so common it definitely effects its prestige.

Is diesel mandatory? If not, I'd consider the equivalent Lexus (GS) if I were you. Rides like a dream and the interior might suit you better.

The GS like other hybrids will only really make sense if you are driving a lot in a city - stopping / starting a lot. I like them but would imagine like most Japanese cars suspension is not up to Mercedes standards ?

I think this whole thing is a bit of a myth. On an open road doing 100kph the hybrid system will still help out. It's only sustained driving (which we can't do much of here) over 120KPH where a hybrid will lose to a diesel.

Also the suspension on a lexus is on par or better than a Mercedes (unless you are going for fancy air suspension).

Well worth a try! At least it will be reliable.

How does the E Class at nearly every taxi rank across Continental Europe affect it's prestige? There are very little if any prestige cars in this class. Maybe you are confusing prestige with premium?
