Hi all, just about to start shelving out a large hotpress and looking at a few options. I could make this up myself with a bit of 2x1 etc but I came across the above in Ikea and thought it might be an option - easily removed if needed, the same price if not a bit cheaper (just €95 for a run of 3m!) than buying all the materials for DIY option, modular so can easily add/remove shelves etc. However, it looks a little bit light and just wondering has anyone used these in a similar application and what they thought? Don't think theres any pre-assembled in Ikea to view and not keen on going up there again unless im there to purchase! Open to any other modular/assembled options people might have - room is 2.5x3.5m and I intend shelving out the two sides approx. 3m long (rest is full of tanks/plumbing etc...

A few lengths of 2x1, and a few screws would be a lot cheaper.

yes your probably right but by the time you get these planed down smooth and get the frame built up theres a fair amount of time involved - haven't priced the raw materials but you would be looking at least €50 (would probably use framing brackets and leave it that shelves could be removed if doing it DIY - i.e. get carried away a bit!!!) so not big bucks either way, the time is a bigger investment of which I have a limited amount. The benefit of the modular system is that it can be just fixed back to a ledger on the wall with a few screws then can be removed easily if needed (for ease of access to tank or other plant).

Say €2 per 16" length of 2x1. For four shelves you'll need 12 lengths, assuming a gap between each lat, so €48. The off cuts can be used to brace the shelves you make up, but you'll need lengths screwed to the walls, so another €16, and if your not running it wall to wall you'll need heavier lengths to brace the end. You're now up around the €70 mark including screws, not including the 3x2 or whatever you use for the ends. You'll need it delivered as well, because you'll want the full 16", so there could be cost there too.

I reckon making them up mightn't save you much cash at all.

Thanks Cletus for doing the math, I was just being lazy! Normally I would try and make everything given the time, as I really enjoy it (plus invested in a lot of tools over the years and like to make use of them!!!) But this is fairly common - a few years back I was going to make a garden shed but I could buy one cheaper than I could buy the materials so it just didn't make sense!!! The only worry I have is that the quality and strength of the timber in the Ikea unit as it looks a little on the frail side, hard to beat a good over engineered sturdy DIY shelving :) Spose I could always plant on a few 2x1 battens etc after installation if I thought it wasnt good enough...

I'm pretty sure they have one of those built in Ikea. If I'm right it's after the drawers before the kids stuff, beside the algot shelves and coat racks. Go backwards through the Ikea loop as it's near the end.

The algot stuff might be another option. It's good for laundry as it's very flexible and the baskets are great for towels, socks, shirts etc.
