Depends on the bitrate chosen by the radio station. To calculate the annual cost the average bitrate is multiplied by the current tariff charge per kbps. Current tariff charge is €388.47 per kbps.

The current averages for the RTÉ radio stations on Saorview are Lyric 160kbps, Radio1/2fm/RnaG/Pulse 120kbps, the others 112kbps.

€43,508 to get Newstalk on then (they hardly need anything higher)

Newstalk being speech based would likely go for 64k/80k mono, meaning even less cost.

I reckon Tom Dunne might argue with that

He can argue all he likes, sure they are mono on FM so would likely go mono on digital too.

AFAIK Newstalk on Astra 28.2 is 192kbps, which is way more than is needed IMHO.

Around €50k p/a for a 128kbps stereo radio station on Saorview.

You need to bring your station audio to the Saorview multiplex in either Donnybrook or Tallaght (ideally both). The cost of this is borne by the radio station and is not included in the €50k.

That is because NT were using Astra for signal distribution to their transmitter sites very recently while they changed over to a new distribution provider.
