Just curious, time indexing of costs for calculating CGT seems to have ended about 2002.

Will it ever be reintroduced to allow the seller to compensate for inflation over time?

Very unlikely. No calls for it, no high rates of inflation so it wouldn't make much difference (although it would make some - perhaps not enough to generate political pressure to do it).

    Doubtful.

Revenue are trying to simply taxes for the general public and this adds another dimension of difficulty to an already difficult taxhead.

Highly doubt it. Inflation has not increased significantly since 2003. At least compared to the 70s and 80s. You can still claim indexation relief on costs before 2003 though.

Ok, sorry to all for necroing this thread, but is it more appropriate to ask this question in 2024? (given what's occurred over the past few years)

Edit: If they're going to keep it simple by not introducing indexation, it's disappointing that Capital taxes remained at 33% in the 2025 budget, I was thinking it might be reduced to maybe 30%
