Help with buying 2 cars required

Looking for some help with choosing two cars, one for herself and one for me. We've got to a situation now where we need to change for a couple of reasons - age/condition of her car, more space required due to 3 growing children (13, 10, 7) and the reduced mileage I am doing so a switch from petrol to diesel.

Let's start with my wife's car. She is currently driving a 10 y/o Corolla Verso with 90k km on the clock and does no more than 10k kms per year.

We need something large enough to take all five of us and it needs to be petrol. She likes the high driving position of the Verso and likes the look of the Kia Sportage and Mazda CX5 but they're both available in diesel only. Budget here is €20k-€25. She'll be looking to hold onto this purchase for ~5 years.

I'm driving a 08 Exec Accord 2.2 Diesel which has 125k miles on the clock. It's also beginning to show its age. I've been leaning towards the A6 as being my next purchase for a while now but having changed roles in work recently I'll be travelling a lot more therefore reduced mileage at home, probably 15k km max annually. Therefore looking at petrol here too. When at home I'll be doing reasonable mileage on weekends driving kids to sporting events, mainly motorway driving, so need something medium to large sized and comfortable. Personal preference is with the German brands. Budget here is up to €35k.

Noticed the new X-Trail is available as a 1.6 petrol option in the UK so could possibly switch the budgets around to fund that. Doesn't look as if that petrol engine is available here?

I have considered both the Passat and Octavia but wondering if there is anything obvious I haven't considered? Thanks.

Just to be clear, your wife needs more space than is in the Verso?

Quite hard to get the German stuff you mention in petrol at the moment I would've thought. As much as people like to mention DPFs, I've found an M50 or M1 blast a few times a month has seen me right with diesels (doing about 10,000kms a year) but like you, I'd go petrol if there were more available in the types of car I've gone for over the last few years.

I would think that one of the cars could be an EV. Check out the hybrid/ev section to see if it fits the bill.

For yourself you should be able to get a 1.5 ecoboost titanium Mondeo with some change left over.

And for your wife, maybe a C-Max 1.0 ecoboost ?

The Verso fits the bill space wise, just it's getting on a bit now and she wants to come up a few years to something a couple of years old. Thanks.

None of the crossovers will give as much space as she's used to.

For your own car I'd go diesel. You mightn't be doing big mileage per year but your actual driving will suit a diesel car.

You could look at the Hyundai Tucson as they do a petrol model. It's not the most up to date engine, but it's not an expensive car, the Sportage and Tucson are basically the same thing. The Ford Kuga also comes with the option of a petrol.

As before though, they won't have the rear space the Verso has.

Best off dropping the pretence around space :)

Lots of folk have opted for the new generation of crossovers based on looks alone. Not as practical as they look however, but good to drive and you'll certainly blend in on the suburban trips?

Have you factored in the Ateca or Kodiaq yet? Fine cars.

The Ateca is on the list alright. Possibly the Kodiaq but we'll see how we get on with the former.

Another suggestion could be the Focus ST line estate similar to the one posted in the photo thread last week ?
