Upgrading car

My mother is finally upgarding her car after having her current one for 12 years (03 1l Yaris). I've been going through possible cars with her, but not seeing much that fits what she likes, so hoping somone here might have a bit more experience/insight.

She loves saloons, but doesnt want anything bigger than a 1.4 petrol. She loved the look of a 12 passat when we went to look at cars, but thinks it's too big for her. Her budget is 12000. Looking for something around 2010 and up. She likes teh saloon civic but the automatic 1.3 puts her off and wont go for a 1.8

Ideally wants something really reliable that she can have for another 10+ years with minor issues and just regular maintenance.

    I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

Would she consider a Jetta if the Passat felt to big?

Why is she put off an automatic. If she's to have the car for the next 10 years or so an automatic might be beneficial if age or medical issues were to become a problem. Also seats that are easy to get out of as... But that is only making the assumption that she will be elderly in around 10 years time

She's just used to a manual and so would prefer to stick to one. She's never driven an automatic before.

I was saying that. My dad isn't a big VW fan though and wants her to go with Honda. He drives her current car as well. I think a jetta would be good, but the smallest engine is a 1.6, isn't it?

    She really wants a saloon.

Theirs a few on DoneDeal that's 1.4 or under. You might see better if you looked around.

Brilliant! I'll have her take a look. Might go to our VW dealer as well

Seemingly she's starting to lean towards a newer 1.3 civic hatch, seeing as my dad thinks Jettas are "pieces of s**t".

Is she handy at reversing, the rear visibility on the Civic hatch isn't great, but you get used to it easy enough if you're actually able to reverse/use mirrors etc.

I was the same. But actually I can certainly see the advantages to automatic. I had surgery recently and if it wasn't for the automatic I wouldn't have been able to drive. But can completely understand wanting to stay manual as it feels like a big change

Look for a 1.33 litre Corolla. Just don't bother with the older 1.4 litre version as the tax was high on them from 2009 onwards

I'd get her into an I 30,or a Honda civic automatic, once she has a lash of an automatic, she won't go back.

I would recommend you take a look at the Honda jazz (if she's willing to look at hatchbacks) my grandmother went from a 1 litre yaris into one and found that it's bigger inside but not too much bigger outside ( easier to park )

She loved the acceleration you get from it too compared to what little the yaris gave,

It's easier to get in and out of if you are taking into account it will last 10 years, this can be overlooked but its very handy

And reliability wise it's been cheap and easy enough to keep running for her,

I really don't... Changing from automatic to manual is a big change, going the other way is just three minute and one left-foot braking away.

OP, do you mind me asking what age is your mother?

My parents drive a small hatch back and my brother drives a 3 series and they've often to collect things for him from shops simply because nothing fits in his car due to the boot.

Thanks for the replies everyone. She's set on a manual because she just prefers having extra control. She might have this for 10 years but getting elderly and needing an auto isnt something that she sees. Shes very active. So she's not going to budge on that.

She also wants something somewhat comfortable but not too big. Space isnt an issue because if we need to move anything big or go somewhere a good bit away we'll take my car. Hers is mainly just going to the shops, little spins around the place.

I showed her the i10, i30, jazz. All of which she said were too small or didnt like the shape of them. She thinks the new kia rio is alright, so might have a look at those at some point.

How about an Opel Astra saloon or a Renault Fluence? A Mazda 3 is another option.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
