1200 km 3 days trip with IONIQ

Apologies for such a delay bringing this all data towards public. Really busy at work and home is not where I even want to sit down in front of PC after spending all day doing it.

I had my friends over from Lithuania for the bank holiday and we (5 adults and 2 kids) had to basically choose weather we hire a 7 seater or go with 2 cars one of which is IONIQ. So latter was more economically feasible. I have to say I was not entirely sure what to expect as it was my first long trip in a car which I owned only few weeks.

Trip was: Lusk - Dingle (via Limerick) - Ring of Kerry - Galway - Lusk (via Ballinasloe)

I did plan our trip quite well and created a map (linky) which hit all the areas where SCP or FCP is located more or less looking at potential range left and enough to save me if one SCP/FCP isn't working.

In general: I am very happy with the experience. ESB infrastructure was not letting me down in almost all cases, saying almost as there was an issue with FCP opposite to Galway's airport in Topaz. I had to ring ESB, retry charges and etc, in the end just had enough to reach Ballinasloe.
Overnight charging was done via Granny Cable from a window of Cottage we staid in.

Car feedback: The car handles very good in twisty turns, does not care about hills, quite the opposite in most cases I was able to regain from 2 to 6 KM to GOM just using regen 2 to 3 and back. Very rarely I'd use brakes.
One thing I am not entirely liking is how "light" the front of the car feels on Motorway or even a stretch of back road where speed limit is 100. Not sure what is the weight ratio on the car, but it just feels like car is too light on front and wheel is getting so light, that you wonder is there grip in tires anymore? Spending so much hours behind the wheel felt good, everything is comfy for my likings. LOVED IT! :]

If you have any specific questions - shoot it out, I will answer. I'd write more about the whole experience, but have no time on my hands.

You will see the part from Portlaoise to Limerick... let's say I was going really fast this stretch :-] and weather was very bad, high wind and strong rain in the face.

Now that's the one thing I was not expecting you to say!

One of the most impressive things about the Ioniq from my point of view is the stability at speed, and I'm talking a lot faster than 100km/h. I've driven the car many times at speeds up to the indicated top speed of 172km/h (real speed 167km/h) and I found the car extremely stable and well behaved and quite responsive to the throttle and steering. It might be the aerodynamics, the weight and the very low centre of gravity of the car. I have no idea how you found it to be different???

In all my experiences, there was no wind, the good quality motorway was bone dry and I had 3 kids in the back (no adults) or no one. And no weight in the boot. Maybe different circumstances for you?

Nice efficiency figures on the RoK.

9kWh/100km on the stretch from the Cliffs to Galway FCP! :D

Were you doing 120km/h for the stretch from Portlaoise to Limerick (17.4kWh/100km)? From my experience 17kWh/100km seems about average for 120km/h, although 16.XkWh figures wouldn't be unusual either. My general rule of thumb is 150km range at 120km/h speeds with 20km spare for an alternate CP.

Dont get me wrong, the car IS very stable and landed on the road, but if you add 100-120km/h + wind be it sideways or direct at you in gusts, the steering wheel is too sensitive/light for my likings. It is not BAD, but just noticeable more felt than my previous car (2005 Legacy Sedan, non turbo, on r18 wheels).

i had 2 adults in front and one 4 years boy in the back with just few bags of stuff in trunk.

Ah ok, I've no experience yet of strong side winds or head wind. All the times I hit V-max was in perfect conditions with almost no wind.

The weight distribution of the Ioniq is poorer then models with batteries in the floor, and the common form factor between the ice , hybrid and BEV versions is one of the few areas where the car has been criticised.

This could explain the feeling of a light front end , as the electric electric is likely to be lighter then the ice version.

Did you have Lane Keeping Assist on? I have noticed at "really" fast speeds the LKA can be a bit jerky especially if the stretch of road has some bends. :)

If you turn off LKA you should find it to be more stable.. especially at those speeds ;)

I had that off the moment I tried it. Don't like the feeling that something is moving the wheel for me :) I just have the Alert for departure...

The FCP is a little flaky , I use it regularly I find that you have to
lean on the plug until it locks, registers and starts charging and wait for the next "click" is
    then it should be ok

But I had the same issue

My father ( age 89 ) thought it was a bit light in front , I could not tell the difference , but having driven trucks for years as
I younger man I take him at his word.

I never felt it was light at the front but it certainly doesn't handle as well as the SVE Leaf but it's a lot more comfortable on rough broken roads, so for drives where you don't want to drive on the motorway but on back country roads then the soft suspension really is nice. The Leaf rear suspension is a bit giddy on sharp bumps but it's a lot of fun on back twisty roads.
