Job Interview References

    Okay so I have to go to a job interview tomorrow and I've never had a job before, I've just turned 20 and am going into my third year of college. For my references I just put down my old school principal because I didn't really know who else to put on there. I haven't told my old principal that I would be requiring a reference. The job interview is at McDonald's, will they really ring to get a reference if I were to get the job? My college year is up as well so I'm not in contact with any of my tutors to ask for references or can't really think of anyone else.

    Drop your tutors an email. :) Have you done any voluntary work or the like, where you might get a reference? Is there a local 'upstanding citizen' that might give you a reference?

    At the interview, just mention that you would like to be told if they are contacting references, so you can give them a heads up.

    Note that school is finishing very shortly, so your principal will only be available for a few weeks.

    With the interview, they will want to know that you are willing:
    * to work hard,
    * to follow instruction,
    * to pay attention to detail,
    * to learn (just because you have a few yeas of college doesn't mean that you know much about them internally and you could be learning from an 18 year old),
    * to work varying shifts.

    Dropping some of the above into your answer should help at interview. You can expect to be put on an duty - kitchen, till, dining area. Make sure you are clean, tidy and presentable - including shoes! :)

    I'm not really that close to my tutors and no voluntary work. Is it likely they will even check the reference? And I guess I'll find an upstanding citizen somewhere if need be.

    They're going to be trusting you with (a) food for hundreds of people and (b) their money. They don't want a psychopath / scumbag / thief.
    I've been told I sound different on the phone...
    Not worth it.

    If it's a job that you're applying for with no experience then they won't check references. And if they do then you should ask yourself if you even want to work for that person. It might not be worth your while, any decent employer will be able to figure out if you're up to scratch for a no-experience job just by meeting you.

    If you were suggested to get a reference from " a guard you know, the local parish priest, your teacher from school" then just put "reference available on request".

    I think it is very reasonable to want some type of reference when someone is starting work in your business.

    You should definitely tell your principal you have done this. If someone rang me out of the blue for a reference without prior warning I would annoyed to be honest.

    Have you ever played sports? A coach might be able to provide a character reference for you.
